Some Questions Are Dumb
Here's the subhead (the head is "Blue is the New Black" oh-stop-you-are-killing-me) beneath Maureen Dowd's New York Times op-ed column for today. "Studies show women are getting gloomier and men are getting happier. Did the feminist revolution end up benefiting men more than women?"
No. The backlash against feminist and womanist social/political/economic gains has benefited men more than women. This right here is part of it. Neither Ms. Dowd's column (I usually don't have a lot of use for her, but she's been getting things right lately) nor the studies referenced mention feminism or how it's failed. But the Feminism Has Failed Women narrative is strong and fucking ubiquitous. Whoever wrote the subhead is feeding the monster.
This ties into a enormous web of lies that I'm currently mulling over, but that is a much longer essay for a different day.
