I had a dream last night in which I was playing an online game. It wasn't a game that exists in real life (at least as far as I know), but it was something weirdly specific like it could be an actual game, though.
The game was sort of like a board game crossed with a
RTS game. That is, the playfield looked kind of like you were looking at an old-school game board from top down, or at least part of a board, as the screen would scroll as you moved around. Each player had a base or a castle or something on the edges of the field, all of which were connected by a path of boxes. In some of these boxes were the units that the player could summon (which is where the RTS element comes in), from weakest in the boxes closest to the bases and strongest toward the middle of the board. In the very middle was a communal "super unit" (in this case it happened to be a dragon). From each player's castle to the middle, each unit was specific to the faction/race/whatever that they chose, but they could also summon creatures along the path to the other players' bases as well. To be able to summon any of the later, stronger units, you had to have summoned at least one of the creature that came before, i.e. you couldn't just rush to the middle and summon the dragon. The goal, of course, was to build up an army and take out the other bases while also protecting your own. Once summoned, each creature could be moved along the board in any direction, either toward an enemy base or back toward the player's own base, and they would fight any enemy creatures encountered anywhere on the board. The player token could also be placed in the base itself, which would allow the player to access special attacks against any invading armies (e.g. think Eddie Riggs or whoever jumping onto the stage in one of the RTS sections of
Brutal Legend).
Thing is, I apparently don't play online games even in my dreams, or at least not very well, since I was continually getting my butt kicked. I did manage to take out someone's dragon before they blew up my base with the rest of their army almost immediately after, though.
In any case, while the game made sense in the dream, I don't think it would be a very interesting video game at all IRL. I mean, if you're going to play a RTS game, just play an actual RTS game. No need for the limited board game trappings in a video game like that. It might could work as an actual board game though, I don't know.
