The wood floor creaks underneath his feet, a bit too loud for his taste. “I need to remember to ask someone to refurbish this wing, aru,” he murmurs to himself. He lifts the lantern up a bit higher to spread more light down the darken corridor and suppresses a slight shudder. He has not been down this way since the fall of the Qing Dynasty. “Some night to explore my house; I need to remember to get some sleeping medicine to cure my insomnia, aru.”

He quickens his pace and stops in front of a paper door at the end of the passage. It is old, the wood slightly rotten and paper a dark yellow colour, but the door holds firm and unmoving. He shoves hard against the stubborn door, grunting a bit, but slowly it gives way. The door groans and slides back slowly, half reluctant to give access to the room it has been guarding for centuries. The room inside is dusty and his footsteps are left on the ground as a signature that he has been there.

He raises the lantern up high and looks around for a candle stick, but all he finds are piles upon piles of ancient scripts dating back to when his people first learned how to write, and, sitting in the far corner in the back are his most precious memories: the time when he and all of his siblings lived under one house, when Mesopotamia and Indus were still alive and always watching. He sighs sadly and stretches, his ancient bones cracking.

Going through all of those memories will take time, but he will do it, because he is old, because he wants to remember the time when everyone was young, because he wants to remember a time when they were all still one big happy family.

The next day Shinatty-chan finds China in an aged room, curled up in one corner with a book lying open on his chest. He smiles and quietly slips away.

He has never seen his old friend more peaceful.

Notes:

1. If I remember my AP World History correctly, then the Qing Dynasty was the last Chinese dynasty, which ended around WWI in 1912.

2. Mesopotamia, the Indus River Valley, and China are the three oldest nations in Asia, and only China is still alive. Mesopotamia left behind the countries of the Middle East (technically a part of Asia) and Indus left behind India (and Pakistan).

I am so unused to writing in the present tense. Please tell me if there are any errors. Thank you!
