Lost in Tezuka
So, yeah, there's lots of baby stuff to report--but in fact, there have been even a few non-baby related developments in my life. Yes, you guessed it, more action-packed adventures in translation. One event that almost snuck past me without notice was the publication of my latest Tezuka manga, MW.
It came out around the time Uzi was born, and actually took me several weeks to even notice. I still haven't even seen the finished product (need to hassle Vertical to send me my copies). So far, it seems to be doing well, and a reviewer at Advanced Media Network wrote:
Vertical has been retaining translator Camellia Nieh for their editions of Tezuka’s works. I first encountered her efficient and accurate translation style back when I was reading the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex tie-in books (reviewed earlier at AMN). She did yeoman work for them for Tezuka’s Buddha, Kirihito and Apollo’s Song as well, and her work here is every bit as skillful and undistracting.
This made me happy, even though I didn't actually translate the Buddha series.
The most exciting development, however, is that Vertical has landed the license for Black Jack, one of Tezuka's most famous manga series, and they've entrusted me with the translation. I feel extremely honored, as this is a very well known manga in Japan. There are 17 volumes in all, and they will come out every other month, starting next fall.
On every front, the translating-from-home situation is going very smoothly. Several new clients, including on one of the leading manga publishers in the US, have expressed interest in working with me in 2008 when I'm ready to take new jobs. I am feel so, so, so lucky to have a job that I like, with lots of flexibility, that I can do from home in between cuddling my baby!
