Places I went to eat during vacation:
Mexican-
Texican Cafe in Manchaca. It's changed hands and is actually a decent joint now. You can get braised goat.
Jalisco Vallarta in South Austin. It's a hole in the wall with righteous horchata and damn good food.
Vivo's in East Austin. This place boasts a lush garden, killer ritas with fresh orchids, pictures of naked ladies on the walls, and tortilla soup that will change your religion. Also, ladies get a long-stemmed rose at the end of the meal. I think it was my fave.
Barbecue-
The Salt Lick in RoundRock. It's not the original. The pit-cooked barbecue, however, tastes the same, is still served on bakelite sectioned plates, and you still eat it sitting at long wooden tables. The difference is that the place is still predominately a restauraunt, as opposed to the overblown resort that the original location in Driftwood has become.
Rudy's in Austin. My uncle got it to go on christmas eve so he didn't have to cook. Cracked pepper rub on the ribs and jalepeno in the sausage.
Amurrikin-
Magnolia Cafe in South Austin. this is my favorite diner in town, because of the good food (their eggs benny is to die for) and the giant pterodactyl skeleton on the ceiling. Also, the waitstaff kicks ass and takes names.
Little City Coffee in downtown Austin. They make coffee and sammitches out of baguettes. I had one with roast beef and wasabi on the lawn of the state capital.
Katz's New York Deli in downtown Austin. Sadly, I believe this establishment is no more. It was wonderful for 25+ years, and has succumbed to the economy. I had a lovely cup of borscht to comiserate.
The Alamo Drafthouse Ritz in downtown Austin. The menu boasts everything from gourmet dinner salads to fried pickles, has movie-themed cocktails, and eight microbrews on tap. Did I mention it's a MOVIE THEATER?! Awesome. Beyond. Words.
Cheddar's in Pflugerville. Good steaks, great service. Don't get the green beans; they're from a can.
Kerbey Lane Cafe in South Austin. Despite all the hype, if you're going, go before nine pm. Our food was cold and of mediocre quality and the service was the worst I've ever had in my life. And they charged a gratuity for it! Oh. And the place is crawling with hipster scum.
Bars I drank in during vacation (If I can remember)
Maggie May's on sixth street. A pleasant little dive, when the UT kids are home for the holidays. It was nicely dead in there, and everyone from Adam to Akon has carved their initials in the oak bar. Cute stoner barkeeps, stiff dranks, good prices, good music.
Chupacabra on sixth street. A trendy looking place with a dive bar feel. Fried food, fried people, flirty bartenders with mad rita skillz.
Fado on fifth street. Now I remember why I don't do chain pubs. they're stupid. met there on new years' eve, so the place was stupid-full, blasting shitty pop music, and to add insult to injury, they did NOT have my scotch.
Mugshots on seventh street. I LOVE THIS PLACE. It's dark. It's skeezy. There were christmas lights over the bar, which was copper-sheeted. The walls were limestone and covered in celebrity mugshots. The bartenders were big and hairy and played eighties hair metal. They liked me because I ordered straight whiskey.
Buffalo Billiards on sixth street. I'm terrible at pool. I'm even worse when I'm drunk. THe place is dear to my heart, though; check you ID at the door for a rack, tableside service...only don't go when UT is in session and be prepared to be hit on by retards.
Little Woodrow's in the Southpark Meadows Center. Not my idea. Not my scene. The outside bits are nice; picnic tables and split-rail fencing under live oaks. It's also nice that they serve beer in big honkin' steins. What sucks is all the young assholes who go drink there and the fact that the place is standing on the site of the original Lilith Fair. FU, Southpark Meadows. You and all your workings. The whole place is a city-sized venture in greed and suck.
That having been said, it was the first day back today. My schedule is divided strangely this quarter, with a 2 hour german class (mit Langweiliger Doktor Partsch, bleah!)in the morning and a film studies class from four to six.
And HOLY HOT PROFESSOR!
Yowza.
He's young. He's handsome. He's absent-minded. He has messy schoolboy hair. He wears v-neck sweaters. He does NOT wear a ring. I think he might be gay, but I don't care--he's pretty, and he's smart, and I'm SO hanging on his every word so I can get an A.
I showed Shu his picture online, and she was like, "DAmn, I'm invading your class!"
Movie nite just got a whole lot more interesting.
Tomorrow, I get another crack at the fiction workshop I bombed. i guess I'll start thinking about ideas. I'm gonna write about something gay. Because I can.
I had 2 family members come out to me over the break, by the way. What a vacation!
