Roksonaki!
Boy, professor Atis never ceases to surprise me. Today in Turkish Folklore, a Kazakh rock/jazz band called Roksonaki did a demonstration for us. It wasn't their real rock stuff, it was more folky. They're on tour to all these universities to help people understand the old tradition of music. It was pretty neat though. The whole time, the musicians were talking through this cultural anthropologist who was translating for them. She was so cool. I also really liked listening to the Russian they were speaking. Yeah, Kazakhstan is geographically Asian, religiously Muslim, and linguistically Russian. Very interesting, no? Anyway, it was really quite a treat. The music was very different than anything I've ever heard. Have a listen at their Myspace.
