I was spreading an old newspaper on the floor where the cats' litter tray now lives, and suddenly noticed the headline "Daft and delirious: meet the new Doctor Who". Underneath that was a nice photo of Matt Smith in David Tennant's cast-off shirt and tie looking at what I think must be Rory's phone, plus a very enthusiastic review of The Eleventh Hour ("Smith is a man who could have been born with a stripy scarf round his neck.")

On the other side of the page, there was a preview telling us about "an excellent drama documentary of Van Gogh's life and work... with the added treat of Benedict Cumberbatch (Stuart: A Life Backwards) vividly bringing Van Gogh to impassioned, blue-eyed life." (There was also a small photo of Cumberbatch doing this.)

Yes, I had jumped back in time to April 5, 2010. My mother is not six months dead. Matt Smith is the new Doctor. I am on my way home from Eastercon with a pile of Impossible Things. Benedict Cumberbatch is not yet Sherlock.

I may not have fitted quite as many centuries into the past three and a half years as the Eleventh Doctor did, but it feels as if a lot's happened.

Oddly enough, there was another blast from the past when Rosie and I went to the vets an hour later (nothing serious, we hope, she's just got a bit of a cold so she's had a shot of antibiotics). James, the young vet whom we probably met around 2010, has just returned from Australia after two years working out there, and seemed very pleased to see "one of my older patients" again. Much chat about low rate of hyperthyroidism in Australian cats and whether it's due to more sunlight or different diets. I'd no idea he was coming back, so it was a nice surprise.
