Weekend In Review / Working Out

Weekend was enjoyable, until s1ren got sick. Poor wife was just miserable on Sunday.

Friday: Went out to Happy Hour with Hanna, Travis, Angela and some other people whose names I don't remember. Enjoyable time, actually. Really had a blast just sitting around and making jokes and chillin'. Very social, which I was needing.

Saturday: Had to pass on Debbie's party because the monthly poker game was going on across the alley. I had a total fucking blast! I enjoyed myself immensely and this time around there weren't any loudmouthed idiots making the experience suck for people.
Well, me and Chester might have been a little loud, but we weren't nearly as odious as those who normally fuck things up for the group. And I was never anything but nice and friendly and respectful, even when I lost $113 because Chester flopped a friggin' full house.
*facepalm*
The greatest part about that? It didn't put me out of the game. Went in with $50, lost it all after a few hours and went back in with $50. Built it up, lost that big hand to Chester (and I really learned something then; it's okay to back away from someone betting HUGE, even if you've put a little money in the pot. Why? Because that's the advantage of having more money than someone else; it means you can lose a bit in order to maintain your advantage. Rather than, you know, losing the whole thing because you wanted them to be bluffing).
The best part came when, about an hour later, I got pocket kings, saw a king on the flop and bet aggressively. I frightened a couple of people out of the hand but Chester was feeling rambunctious and challenged me. Turn, we hit another king. I baited him a check/raise and he got the vibe pretty quickly and folded. He says to me, "You've got a pair, dontcha?"
"Kinda," I said, and flipped the kings. I didn't have to, but I wanted people to see the quad kings. Was beautiful! And every player there, even the hardcore guys who don't react to shit, whistled or sat back or something. Everyone reacted and there was a nice feeling of respect I got from The Guys.
No, not because I had four kings. Anyone can do that. The respect was because of the way I played the hand; they all knew I had something good, but no one (and I mean NO ONE) had even suspected I had the third-best hand in the game.
Next I hit a full house on the river and took Chester down quite a bit. Nobody else was battling me at that point; either they didn't have strong hands or I didn't, so we never butted heads. At that stage though, Chester was getting a little reckless. Fun guy, but not the best long-term player.
Me? I ended the night with $169, so up $69 from what I invested. That was exciting, and really made the night totally enjoyable.

My goal for next month is to play with only $50 and hopefully double up, maybe more. That'll depend on my luck, my instincts, my gods and my skill.

Sunday, went and saw Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Wife was sick, feeling stressed and completely in "Do Not Want" mode, so I spent a good amount of time worrying about her.

The movie sucked. Cut to shit, pieced together with ribbon and bits of random junk, flashy without substance, perfectly Hollywood.
I love the books. I loved the first three movies. This one was complete and total ass.

Savlov of the Chronicle gave it 3.5 stars, which I just don't get. I didn't get any sense of frustration or fear from Potter/Radcliffe, Grint/Weasley's role was nearly superfluous, Ginny W. barely spoke or moved, Cho Chang was there for practically no purpose; they included Kreacher but not Dobby, had the trail but totally failed to capture the tension of it and Mrs. Figg was the worst characterization of a person from the book I've ever seen. She was, I believe, supposed to be batty and a little harried, not completely stoned.

They tried to do too damned much, and they ended up not doing any of it very well at all. It was weak, and if you love the series, just watch the first four movies over again and then read the 5th book. Seriously.

Stayed home sick again today.
