The Hold Steady keeps kicking ass immensely.
They've always been very self-referential, their songs sharing short phrases or complete rephrasing of the same subject.
I was listening to the recording of one of their shows which features a song not released on their albums. And suddenly the lyrics to "Guys go for Looks, Girls go for Status" struck me.
That was song number three on John's last CD
I'm gonna make it through this year if it kills me
And it almost killed me
The second line there is taken directly from the third track on The Sunset Tree by The Mountain Goats (fronted by John Darnielle).
Not only are they awesome, they have quite the taste in music.
