Food and fatness

So I watched Super Size Me, and wow, that was a scary movie. For anyone who hasn't heard of it, the basic premise is that this guy eats nothing but McDonalds food, three meals a day, for a month. It's crazy how horrible it turns out to be for his health. And I mean, of course most people don't eat all their meals there but after watching that movie I don't think I want to eat fast food ever. There was also a whole lot about the massive advertising that these fast food and junk food companies do, compared to the tiny health five-a-day advertising. And it totally works--ask my six year old what she wants to eat, and she will always say McDonalds.

Also, I apparently live in the fattest state in the country, Texas. My city is the sixth fattest in the U.S. The movie had a lot of information on the bad food that is often served in schools, too, and since my daughter gets both breakfast and lunch free every day at school, this is the kind of thing that concerns me. She's in good shape, very athletic and small for her age, but then I was too when I was six, and now I'm not.

I tried a black bean burger today when we went out for lunch, and I was surprised that a meatless burger was actually quite good. I know I've got some vegetarians and vegans on my flist--is it hard? Is it a choice you're glad you made? Has it had a positive effect on your health? I don't think I could go the full vegetarian route, but I'd certainly like to eat healthier.

Also, if any of you want some motivation to lose weight, totally watch that movie. It'll put you right off junk food.
