I really can't explain my sudden love for teen shows or teen novels. Ok, I would never say I like a lot of the teen stuff out there i.e Twilight but there sure is a lot of good stuff out there. When I was a teen there such tripe out there that was aimed at teenagers I only stuck to books and movies aimed at adults. There is so much fannish, awesome geek-related stuff that I can relate to that almost makes me wish I was a teen again. Except not.
A part from this post being an excuse to pimp one of my favorite shows ever that treats its women right; I have seen some movies that look great and aimed at the younger crowd.
I am Four
Three main attractions a part from me willing to give any sci-fi/fantasy related movie with a good trailer a try?
Timothy Oyiphant - bolded for emphasis 'cause I love him.
Alex Pettyfer - far more convincing actor that Pattinson who obviously doesn't give a two-shits anymore and I can see potential.
Diana Agron - I get to see her in something that really interests and is non-Glee related. I like Glee but this is more my cup of tea.
Sucker Punch Girls
These pics say it all. And I tend to enjoy the directors work and my weak spot is kick-ass females so this has me terribly excited.
Top Teen Novel of the Year
Graceling by Kristin Cashore
Now this is a romance that is both real yet epic without the girl having a special destiny or the guy destined to be with her or some crap. It felt so real in some parts that I swear the author was peeking in my head; I have never read a novel where I almost 100% identified with the lead female. Her isolation and struggles with not wanting what society thinks women should want; a man wanting to keep and cage her yet her loves her but she can never love him because he won't let her be herself and falling for a man who is sure of himself as man; strong but more that strong enough to let her be herself without attempting to mold her into someone manageable. I think I relate because all my life I have always been surrounded by men who 'mean well; but ultimately want to change me; fear me because they think I should be less and women who can't understand why I value my independence so strongly but yes I still want a man in my life but I would rather do without. A guy is needed for my happiness, I have plenty of that but being in love would be great.
I believe this is why Mercy Thompson resonates so strongly with me as well; she loves Adam but she values her freedom more and knows far too often women sacrifice more and more of themselves when they commit to a relationship. And it doesn't have to be that way and she knows it and is willing to wait it out for the guy who respects that she won't be that women. There are making concessions and slowly losing who you are and not too many people get that.
I also need to meet Patricia Briggs because she also gets other fab things right outside of her women:
Mercy has friends and values loyalty over lusting over some guy
Mercy and Adam her beau are close friends with Warren who is gay and he is allowed to be happy and keep his boyfriend and *gasp*; neither he nor Kyle has died like so many gay characters in novels/movies.
Her POC live and actually have purpose and their own motivations.
That is enough blabbing for now; I will be watching Inception soon. So excited!!!! Only 1 more hour....
Which also means I get to read
levitatethis fic. I miss that.:)
