2012 Movies, TV, and Books (April - June)

Jul 01, 2012 18:22

Movies and TV seasons, in roughly chronological order. * means I've seen it before, bold means I can't believe I haven't.

    April
  1. A Summer Place* (One of my mom's favorite movies. I hadn't seen it in ages.)
  2. Splendor in the Grass* (Another movie I hadn't seen in ages.)
  3. The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond (Bo-ring. Apparently I'm not a huge fan of Bryce Dallas Howard, even with Chris Evans by her side.)
  4. Star Trek, Season 3
  5. Tropic Thunder* (Remembering Mandie on the anniversary of her passing. She dragged me to see this in the theater when she came up for Bumbershoot in 2008. She'd just seen it, and knew she was going to be quoting it all weekend. Wouldn't have been any fun if I didn't get the references.)
  6. Clerks* (Mandie and I did a Kevin Smith marathon when Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back came out.)
  7. St. Trinian's (Back to Colin Firth. Pride & Prejudice references included a dog named "Mr. Darcy," and Colin in a wet white shirt.)
  8. Push* (2009) (I was in a Chris Evans mood.)
  9. House on Haunted Hill (1959) (I just want to know why someone would keep a pool of acid in their basement.)
  10. Tying the Knot
  11. What Would Jesus Buy? (credit card debt and the commercialization of Christmas - two of my "favorite" topics)
  12. a/k/a Tommy Chong (I found that documentaries are good background "viewing" while packing.)
  13. The Union: The Business Behind Getting High
  14. Melvin Goes to Dinner
  15. Iron Man* (2008) (Starting to prep for The Avengers. Agent Coulson's role was a little bigger than I remembered - and I forgot that Nick Fury made an appearance.)
  16. Pirates of Penzance (1983) (I've been wanting to see this for ages, but Netflix doesn't have a good version. Finally borrowed it from a friend.)
  17. The Incredible Hulk
  18. Iron Man 2*
  19. 10 Things I Hate About You* (with someone who hadn't seen it before and needed to)
  20. easy A* (also with someone who hadn't seen it and needed to - different person, same day)
  21. Thor* (more prep for The Avengers)
  22. Captain America: The First Avenger* (the last of the Avengers prep... except that then I did the in-theater marathon...)

April highlights: Tropic Thunder (I forgot how much fun that movie is), the Iron Man movies, 10 Things I Hate About You, Easy A, and Captain America. Never mind that I'd seen them all before, they're fun.

    May
Started with the Ultimate Marvel Marathon
  23. The Avengers (Which was AWESOME!!!)
  24. We Bought a Zoo (Cute.)
  25. Mind the Gap (Boring, and long, and the stories barely connected.)
  26. Green Lantern*
  27. Miranda (2002)
  28. The Change-Up
  29. Friends with Benefits (I think I liked the Natalie Portman/Ashton Kutcher version a little better.)
  30. The Mistress of Spices
  31. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (I always love Simon Pegg, and Jeremy Renner seems to be growing on me. I'm looking forward to The Bourne Legacy.)
  32. Fantastic Four*
  33. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (I thought I'd seen this before, but nope. I liked the extra focus on the Human Torch - the new/temporary power was fun.)
  34. Dinner for Schmucks (I hadn't planned to watch this. I'd already seen the French version, and I hate watching this type of trainwreck. But my mom watched it, and I was in the room, so there you go. At least I always enjoy Paul Rudd and Steve Carell.)
  35. Hall Pass
  36. Mansome (Entertaining, but I think I learned a few things I didn't ever need to know.)
  37. Life as We Know It
  38. The Skin I Live In (Creepy! Of course.)
  39. Salt (2010)
  40. The Social Network (Can't believe it took me so long to watch this. I would be SO pissed off if I were any of the actual people depicted in the movie. I'm not sure anyone walked away looking good.)
  41. One Day (2011)
  42. Tapeheads

May highlights: The Avengers, Mission: Impossible, maybe The Skin I Live In and One Day
I re-watched a few things, too, but stopped keeping track. Especially when I only half-watched things, and solely for the purpose of ogling Chris Evans.

    June
  43. Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle
  44. The Adjustment Bureau
  45. Mulholland Drive
  46. The Middleman, Complete Series
  47. The Great Muppet Caper (I'm sure I saw this as a child, but it's been so long that I didn't remember it at all. Silly, silly muppets.)
  48. Wild Target
  49. Discworld: Wyrd Sisters (miniseries)
  50. In Time (Two thumbs up. I pretty much always like Justin.)
  51. Real Steel (The kid reminded me a lot of the kid that played Anakin Skywalker, except that he could act.)
  52. Phoebe in Wonderland (I'm not sure I like Felicity Huffman, but the movie had me in tears.)
  53. The Music Man (1962)
  54. The Town (2010) (I wasn't planning to see this, but I was curious about Jeremy Renner.)
  55. Sunshine (2007) (Slow, but not bad. I was worried at first because Chris Evans's character had long-ish hair, which didn't work very well. I was glad when the ship's shrink told him to get a haircut - the movie got a little better after that.)
  56. On a Clear Day
  57. My Boy Jack
  58. Bernie (2011)
  59. Mystery Team (Don't waste your time.)
  60. Love Never Dies (Per Dad's request, on Father's Day.)
  61. Die Hard with a Vengeance
  62. My Favorite Year
  63. We Need to Talk About Kevin (Incredibly well done. The kids were all amazing actors. Very uncomfortable to watch.)
  64. Win Win
  65. This Means War (A lot of fun.)
  66. Live Free or Die Hard
  67. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (They took some liberties with Mary Todd Lincoln's character, but I liked the changes.)
  68. The Other F Word
  69. My Sassy Girl
  70. Jeff, Who Lives at Home (I liked it better than other movies by the Duplass Brothers, but it was still a little slow.)
  71. The OH in OHio (I always love Parker Posey, and I always love Paul Rudd, so this was kind of a done deal.)
  72. Speak (I've heard a few people say that they can't really watch Nicolas Cage in a movie because he's always Nicolas Cage (instead of getting lost in the character). I feel the same way about Kristen Stewart. Every mannerism reminds me of a Twilight moment - even the delivery of some lines. This role was a pretty good match for her, except that I would say that it is the start of her typecasting.)
  73. Legends of the Fall* (My sister was having a high school nostalgia day.)
  74. The Artist

June highlights: Phoebe in Wonderland, We Need to Talk about Kevin (just incredibly well done)

    Books...
  1. The Wordy Shipmates by Sarah Vowell
  2. Valley of the Dolls by Jacqueline Susann (I was told the book was really different from the movie. It was not, and I was bored.)

Considering that I was unemployed for two of the three months, I really should've done more reading. Maybe next quarter.
