So. Very strange things happen in the head when you fall in love with two fandoms at the same time. It's even weirder when one of them is Spartacus. And the other is Marvel movie-verse. DEAR GOD. And pictures like this:

So I have been dipping a toe into Marvel fandom lately! And these are the things I have to say:

First, Clint/Coulson, but I go on and on about that in a recent entry.

Second, it's weird because right now the fandom is sort of, movie fans who may or may not have read any comics, plus the comics fans who really love the movies. Not unlike most of Star Trek fandom, there's been a pretty good marriage (probably because the movies were good) and people aren't all, "don't come in if you haven't read the comics." They're more like, "come on in! Don't read any comics until you talk to someone, because some of them are really shitty and annoying! Here are some scans!"

Because the canon is so insane, and has so many canon universes (like, if you plow around Steve/Tony there's something like four separate Avengers comic 'verses) the movie-verse just becomes another universe added to the pile, and people basically pick and choose the stuff they want to do, and make it explicit, like, "canon: Ultimates 616 with some movie verse thrown in" or whatever. I'm going to approach the way I did ST: the movie-verse is my 'verse, but I'll pull backstory willy-nilly from the original source, adjusting as needed.

I might read a couple of stand-alone Hawkeye comics? But that's kind of it. Not really a comics person, and I can pick up the rest through summaries and osmosis.

It also means people are like, cool, AUs! Because with the insanity of constantly rebooted and retconned comics canon, no one can really be all that precious about canon.

Third, the weird thing is how comics are sort of, well, they kill people a lot? And have a lot of adventures in which people don't talk very much? And that leads to a fuckton of character death fic, and a lot of long prosey stories and a lot of hurt/comfort. I think that may change after the movie comes out and more movie-only people move in.

It took me quite a while to find my feet and feel like I started to get it, and I would say that honestly only even kind of started to happen this very evening. And also to feel like the kind of ridiculous drivel that I tend to write-established relationship domestic nonsense, extended ensemble driven AUs where everyone is shipped at the end like a Shakespearean comedy, and smut where one party talks the other one into bed and then continues the conversation during and after the sex-would be welcome.

Fourth, Avengers fandom at least, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if this were true for XMFC, seems to be happening mostly on tumblr and AO3 except for the kink memes.

Fifth, we fail so hard at having lunch. What the heck.

1. Clint/Coulson -- they are sort of tasty and awesome, no? They really hit my competency!porn bump. I think that's the great thing about Avengers, and Marvel in general -- everyone is so Island of Misfit toys, but they totally make it work.

2.And I'm loving how friendly everyone from comicsverse seems. Man, I'm not sure that hardcore comicbook nerd-dom is ready for the force of a million fangirls that is about to descend onto them after Avengers comes out. I'm really excited! And yeah, AUs! I love it. I also love how it's all getting pasted on to the myth that is New York? And so, I've read like, crossovers with things like White Collar and Suits, as if it's all just happening together all at the same time? Which I LOVE.

3. to feel like the kind of ridiculous drivel that I tend to write-established relationship domestic nonsense, extended ensemble driven AUs where everyone is shipped at the end like a Shakespearean comedy, and smut where one party talks the other one into bed and then continues the conversation during and after the sex-would be welcome.

I for one will be on that like a ton of bricks, or a cat on butter, or some other equally appropriate analogy! YAY.

4. I love the AO3 stuff. (D/ling fic for kindle is, like, my new favorite thing!) BUT I do not understand the ways of the tumblr. I know I'm gonna have to figure it out, but I just do not get it.

5. I KNOW. I fail at everything lately -- and this is unacceptable. Let's definitely try to set something up soon!
