Stuff 'n' Things.

~ I am deathly ill. This could stop any time now, kthanxbai!

~NOT SAFE FOR WORK. From the world of sex toys, we have The Vamp. It... sparkles. In sunlight. Also "toss in the fridge for that authentic effect." AHHHHHHHHH. I am scarred for life.

~Meanwhile, I am keeping my Doctor Who review till next week, so I can do the whole two-parter as a single entity. I am withholding judgment till then!

~Oh, Supernatural. Well, I guess it's off on another horcrux One Ring To Rule Them All horsemen's (horcruxmen's?) rings quest. Bless. It really is the Little Black Dress of fantasy plots, I suppose.

Meanwhile, as much as I enjoyed hearing my name said on SPN, repeatedly, and thought the goddess Kali (hee!) was OMG hot, and was pleased that she made it out of the ep. alive, I really felt like the question of the pagan gods was a little... how shall we say... offensive? I really like the way we've kept Yahweh out of the fold of GODS WHO EAT PEOPLE but have put everyone else there. You know, it's not all Baldur and Mercury, right? That people still worship Kali & Ganesh & Baron Samedi? Listen, I have no problem with gods as bad guys, but could everyone get the same treatment, please? Also, fuck you. The staggering ignorance of Americans never ceases to amaze me. Just a couple of days ago, I got handed a paper from one of my students in which there was a casual sentence about how "globally, the world has now come out of the primitive polytheism of the past, and embraced monotheism."

NO. THERE IS ANOTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD. IT IS CALLED ASIA. IT HOLDS AT LEAST A THIRD OF THE WORLD'S POPULATION. IT IS, BY AND LARGE, NOT MONOTHEISTIC. IT INCLUDES SUCH COUNTRIES AS INDIA, CHINA, JAPAN, KOREA, THAILAND, VIETNAM, INDONESIA ETC. OH YES, THERE'S AFRICA TOO. IT HAS ITS SHARE OF 'PEOPLE OF THE BOOK' WHO ARE VASTLY OUTNUMBERED BY THOSE WHO ADHERE TO TRADITIONAL AFRICAN RELIGIONS INVOLVING, YOU GUESSED IT, MORE THAN ONE GOD.

Okay, I will cease the capslock of rage now. Probably.

~ On a more fun note: D. & I are watching SPARTACUS: BLOOD AND SAND. I would like to encourage you to watch it as well. I think hradzka sums it up best in this primer from which I will quote here (because why reinvent the wheel when it's been done quite perfectly already)?

" Have you guys noticed that fandom wants a bunch of incredibly contradictory things?

Fandom wants unbreakable, unshakeable friendships that are deep and complete and true, and fandom wants intense love-hate relationships that aren't so much mature as fraught. Fandom wants characters of color in interesting roles, but often ignores them and writes endlessly about the pretty white boys. Fandom wants women in strong roles, but doesn't want them getting in the way of the slash. Fandom, in short, is absolutely bugfuck, which is why it's at its own throat every other Sunday.

Well, there is one show that has pretty much *everything* fandom has been clamoring for, God help it, and it is SPARTACUS: BLOOD AND SAND [...] It has a stoic, intense, emotionally unavailable hero who has a protective, emotionally supportive, and physically contrasting male best friend; it has a hero who has nothing to do with the women, because they are physically separated and because both the powerful female leads hate his guts, so the women literally *cannot* get in the way of the slash; it features two socially powerful women who make no bones about seeking out their own sexual satisfaction, often graphically; it has male-on-male sex, portrayed as part of a devoted relationship; it has a fairly diverse cast of actors who originate from Ghana, Australia, Lebanon, and more; it features slavery, which becomes a fanfic AU for *every* fandom, as an integral component, with powerful women using men as sex slaves; and it has a ton (quite literally, at least 2000 lbs worth) of well-muscled men who walk around for whole episodes wearing nothing but loincloths and baby oil. Sometimes they forget the loincloths.

Fandom, are you sold yet? This is a show where you can see, in the span of a few minutes: 1) two guys fucking, 2) a gladiatorial pit match featuring a one-armed ring girl with large breasts and a swinging penis, which is shown in close-up, and 3) a man's head being hit with a massive hammer so that it bursts like a watermelon at the climax of a Gallagher show, and if you don't watch Starz (who does?) all of it is available to you through the wonder of streaming Netflix.
"

SRSLY guys, we can't stop watching it, and I find it hilariously, cracktastically awesome. THE MAGIC QUANTUM BLOOD totally rocks as well, 300-style. There is teh gay, teh het, teh slash, teh EVERYTHING. I haven't found any good fic yet, but I think that's cos the show is fic.

~Okay, I'm gonna go back to trying not to die now. Laters!
