Mai sat at her office desk gazing off into space. To her it was just another day. But really it was not. With the passing of both her parents she had given up on celebrating her own birthday, it just was not the same anymore. Sure, her friends made a big deal of it every year and she genuinely appreciated it but in all reality it just made her miss her parents a bit more. This year was no different. She had not even bothered to ask Noll for the day off. She had a strange sense he might have given it to her but again this was the person who always worked on his own birthday so Mai just didn’t bother.
The sound of the manager's door opening jogged Mai from her daze. Noll walked over to her desk.
"File this." He handed her a small stack of paperwork.
"Sure, no problem." Mai accepted the stack and headed to the records room. It only took her about five minutes to file everything. Satisfied with her work she headed back out into the main area. To her surprise Noll was still standing by her desk, arms folded.
“Did you need something else?” She asked.
“Today is your birthday correct?” He said nonchalantly.
“Ah, well yes it is.” Mai was slightly confused by this question. Why did he care? Noll definitely was not the kind of person to give any type of interest in anyone else unless it concerned a case and even that was up to debate. As she continued to ponder his question and odd behavior, Mai did not realize right away that Noll had started talking again. Snapping out of it, she thought she heard him say something about coffee.
“Coffee?” She responded hastily. “What about it? We have some in the pantry.” As Mai turned toward the kitchenette she heard a familar sigh behind her.
“Idiot.” Noll shook his head.
“Hey! It’s not my fault, you confused me!” Mai defended as she faced him again. "I didn't hear what you said."
“Fine.” Noll smirked. “I said, let's go get coffee."
Mai stared momentarily. “Together? With you?” She finally blurted but then quickly put her hand to her mouth blushing slightly. “Sorry. That’s not what I meant.”
“Yes with me." Noll replied. For a moment Mai thought she saw his sardonic smile soften a bit. "I figured you wouldn’t mind being seen with an attractive person on your birthday.” He raised an eye brow at her.
Mai rolled her eyes. There’s the old Naru. Of course she was not going to turn down his offer since heaven only knows if it would ever come again and just wait until Masako finds out.
“Fine, I accept.” She winked at him and grabbing her stuff, she followed Noll out of the office.
Maybe birthdays aren’t so bad after all, Mai thought as the two of them headed for a coffee shop.
