[Rec Post #1] Harry Potter, Johnny's, The Hunger Games, Ugly Betty
So one of my goals attempts for 2011 is to be able to rec fic to everyone! I used to do that willy-nilly on my own journal until I did my Scrapbook 2010 when in building a section dedicated to fics I'd read/would rec for the year realized that I wanted to give them much more love, because that's what the writers deserve. :D Fandoms will span from here to there, but most likely will be focused on Johnny's and American shows.
If you guys don't know about tomomichi - I totally love the fics she recs so go there too for good fic recs! :D (as well as comms that I follow - het_reccers, recs.) If doubles appear between those places and here, you know the fics must be good. lol Oh, word of warning, I also like a lot of PWPs and since they don't have plot, I won't be writing anything up on them, but I WILL link to them. :D

Johnny's Jimusho - Chandler 911 by ?. Jin, Yamapi, Kame, Kusanagi, Aiba, Tegoshi, Sho (NEWS, KAT-TUN, SMAP, Arashi). PG-13.
This was from the recent Johnny's smut meme that I linked to above. The prompt was to have Pin and some others in a Reno 911, Cops situation and the result were four parts of brilliance. It's hysterical, witty and full of fun. Sure, Jin and Yamapi are the front-runners in this, but the other characters just shine from Lieutenant Kamenashi to Flasher!Kusanagi to Hooker!Tegoshi and Stripper!Sho. By the end of the fourth part, you'll seriously just want more of this universe. Lord knows I do. :D
NEWS - Down The Bunny Hole by ?. Tegoshi/Yamapi, hint of Jin/Kame. PG-13.
Also from the smut meme. The prompt was Tegopi and "Tegoshi is chosen to become the first male playbunny and Yamapi is the pervy Hugh Hefner - do whatever you like." And what we got was an absolute gem. Here's a Tegoshi who wants nothing more than to impress Yamapi and tries, like an elementary school-girl, to do just that. It doesn't work too well, especially after he realizes that, ohshit, he has actual feelings for him. There's also hilarity at the other playbunnies that get introduced. Another universe that I wouldn't protest more of. :D
The Hunger Games - Their Last Night of Love: A Special Verity Presentation, Exclusively for Preferred Customers by Yahtzee. Peeta/Katniss. NC-17.
I know I said above that I wouldn't rec PWPs because well... the lack of plot means I'll have to comment on how good the porn is and... awkward. lol That said, the author wrote this in such a way that while, yes, the porn is, er, satisfying. The sex is actually self-serving to the characters as they have to get through a situation that was thrust upon them by The Capitol. It's nice to see Katniss/Peeta just feel their way through a really rough situation. Plus, there's also a hint of Cinna being awesome even though he doesn't even show up.
The Hunger Games - Those Who Wait by wisteria_. Peeta/Katniss. R.
What I like about this fic is that we get Peeta's point of view. The Hunger Games primarily focuses on Katniss (considering it's her POV) and so to get this pitch-perfect version of Peeta recovering after the events of Mockingjay is really awesome. The relationship that we see develop between Peeta/Katniss seems so fluid and real. Like if Collins had gone further past what we saw, this is the reality we would've read all about. And it's nice to see these things addressed and to just see how Peeta and Katniss help heal each other. Not fully, because there's just no chance of that, but even just a little more than before.
The Hunger Games - Scenes From a Revolution by electrumqueen. Haymitch Abernathy. PG.
Just like above, I like those stores we get not from Katniss' point of view. Not that I don't like hers, I just like hearing from others since we've spent three books getting solely into her head. Now fanfiction can explore the other loads of people we've read about. Haymitch is another character that I adored and through this we see him in different points of his life--before he goes to his arena, when he meets Finnick, Cinna and a scene with Peeta. It actually hurts to see these scenes because we see people he cared about and who were ripped away from him in various ways, and God, it's no wonder he always has to have a stiff drink.
The Hunger Games - Feel What It's Like To Be New by electrumqueen. Gale/Johanna with hints of Gale/Katniss, Johanna/Finnick. PG-13.
And just like Those Who Wait, we see two people coming together to recover after the events of Mockingjay. In this case, Gale and Johanna. Honestly, I don't care much for Gale, but Johanna? She's fascinating. I love how she's written here and just, all about the recovery process. We've really never heard that much about their problems so the fact that that is now the focal point? Awesome. I love that they're both essentially in new territory and Johanna just suggests that they should live together (they at least know each other), and they build lives from there. There's also something rather painful that Gale even went back to District Two, much less made a life there, and so it's nice seeing how he deals.
The Hunger Games - Nor Are We Forgiven by stolen-skylines. Haymitch/Maysilee. PG-13.
And now we're back to Haymitch again. This fic uses so little but each line is strong and has meaning. It's like we're all back in poetry class and they're telling us how each word is meaningful and man, that in itself is just cheesy but this fic puts that practice to use so well. We get into Haymitch's head, we get quick snapshots of his lives and yet, we can understand him just with so little.
Ugly Betty - Coming Home by Mynuet. Daniel/Betty. PG.
I really can't say I was the biggest Daniel/Betty shipper. I liked the idea of them just a little, but not enough to flail madly that they should get together. Mainly because, going into the series, the strongest thing they had going for them was their friendship. And with the start of this fic, we see that torn apart. This fic builds upon that friendship and delivers the potential of more.
Ugly Betty - MODE: Final Issue! by Yahtzee. Daniel/Betty, Amanda/Tyler, Wilhelmina/Connor, and hint of Marc/Justin at the end. PG-13.
God, this fic spans SO MUCH TIME. It starts immediately after the series finale and moves forward from there. What is really interesting about this fic is that it doesn't just focus on Daniel and Betty, but remembers the other characters and weaves their lives into the story without it being awkward or abrupt. It works. And the relationships developed are lovely and just... I don't know. The way the events flows, the way the character grows. It's a nice end note to the series if you weren't satisfied with the end of Ugly Betty.
