"What do you mean Niko sent you?" Ryo snapped when one of their teachers led two mages into their library. Tsuyoshi gave Ryo a pointed look, telling him without words to behave and that Niko wouldn't want him to get his temper up. When Ryo inhaled than exhaled, and gave Tsuyoshi the biggest (and fakest) smile he could muster, Tsuyoshi walked out of the room, leaving the six to their own devices.

"Niklaren Goldeye," Shige said stiffly, "requested for our help, more of." His eyes darted from Koyama who was standing silently next to him, allowing him to talk and gauging the reaction of the other three in the room. While Ryo was standing directly in front of them (only a few feet from the door), Yamapi had his nose buried in some book, sitting on top of a table not too far away - trying to keep from not looking too interested in their conversation, but obviously keeping an ear out in case something important was said. Massu and Tegoshi were sitting at the table behind Yamapi's, crowded over a piece of paper - low murmurs exchanged between them and pen scratching against wood.

Shige's eyes darted back to Ryo's. "Don't believe it," Ryo scoffed, arms folding against his chest. "You're academics."

"You say that with such disdain." Ryo's eyes narrowed. "Even academic magic is considered magic."

Wind picked up in the room and Koyama's hand gripped onto Shige's suddenly, but Shige's eyes never left Ryo's, stern and unwavering.

"Ryo-tan," Tegoshi called from the table, his eyes never leaving the sheet in front of him. "Your wind's picking up." Slowly, very slowly, the wind started to die down; Koyama's grip loosened with it.

There was a dull silence when Koyama dropped his hand, his eye catching sight of even Yamapi's attention being caught by the two, who had yet to break eye lock.

"Didn't even bat an eye," Ryo said, voice somewhat impressed.

Shige exhaled. "Master Goldeye warned us about you."

Ryo barked out a laugh, turning around to the remaining empty table. "Of course he did. Why don't you sit down and tell me how exactly you're supposed to help?"

Koyama watched as Shige followed behind Ryo, keeping a wary eye on Tegoshi and Massu, as though afraid they may attack him at any moment, but none comes (they were too busy arguing over the last frame).

A hand clapped him on the back. "Your friend has balls," Yamapi said, approvingly. "Nobody stands up to Ryo like that. I think he was actually impressed."

Koyama laughed shakily. "I don't think Shige was standing so much as he couldn't even muster up the strength to do much of anything else."

Yamapi laughed - sincere, hearty. "Either ways, I think we should be able to work well together."

"Even though we're academic mages?" Koyama asked curious - not accusing in the least.

"Ryo-chan's just wary after so many had passed him over, saying he didn't have magic and that he was haunted. You know how it goes." Koyama's eyebrow went up as Yamapi grinned. "He's gotten over it."

"Right." Koyama's eye went back to the two at the table - Shige had sheets upon sheets of plans he'd been coming up with during their journey to the Winding Circle. Ryo was waving them away one by one, without moving a finger, complaining loudly that this is the best an Academic could come up with? He wondered if Yamapi was really right. In all accounts.

--

This wasn't a simple case they had stumbled onto - some man, no. Maybe woman - Niko warned them against pre-judging - was kidnapping young children who had signs of academic magic, sucking their magic dry, and practically leaving the children dead. All for the sake of power. Koyama hated selfish people like that. A thought that was even further propelled at the sight of the children who came back - eyes sunken, lips turned down at the corners, skin so pale that it looked like they had never seen sunlight before. Half of their souls had been stolen from them - parts of themselves that they'd never get back again.

"What do you mean you have no more ideas?!" Ryo snapped, fist slamming against the table. "Another child was kidnapped last night. That makes two in the last month. Five for the past half a year. This means he's speeding up!"

Shige dug his fingers into his hair, staring down at the sheets that he'd been staring at repeatedly for the past few weeks. "I know the statistics," he growled, raising his head to meet Ryo's gaze. Koyama noted with concern the dark bags shaping underneath Shige's eyes. "But I can't just come up with ideas off the bat! You have gone through each and every one that I've thought of and eliminated them completely. There's nothing I can do right now!" Shige slammed his palm against the table, eyes furious.

"Shige, calm down," Koyama said slowly, trying to keep himself calm as he said it.

"NO!" Shige yelled, voice breaking as he did so. "We've been here for nearly a month now. A month, Koyama. And we haven't done anything to help." Everyone looked at him, stunned. "I don't know what we have left."

"I knew we should've gotten mages with medallions. Not trainees," Ryo mumbled underneath his breath. But under the quiet of the room, everyone heard it, loud and clear. Koyama could feel his heart constrict just a little.

"Ryo-chan," Yamapi said firmly, scolding and reprimanding.

Ryo looked up, meeting Yamapi's eyes before swallowing. "Sorry," he mumbled. "I didn't mean that." He caught Shige's gaze. "I'm as agitated as you are."

Shige nodded solemnly. Koyama could tell he was trying to blink away any sign of tears forming in his eyes.

"We may have a plan," Tegoshi piped up. Everyone turned to him and Massu sharply. "It's a little complicated though," he said frowning, elbowing Massu beside him.

"But if done right, it has a high chance of working?" Yamapi asked, sounding just as much a leader as they considered him.

Massu paused, licking his lips. "I don't-" he started before Koyama peeked at the papers in front of him. "So this is what you guys have been looking at, those nets all the time."

Massu and Tegoshi looked at him with surprise. "How did you-" Tegoshi started.

"Just because we're trainees doesn't mean we haven't started to develop what we think is our specialty," Koyama said with a wink. He started to examine the sheets, and realized that the two hadn't just meant using their magics, but combining all of theirs - even Koyama and Shige's academic powers (which weren't as strong as the other four). A plan that had to be precise, and exact - and absolutely no screw-ups. One that, if successful, could lead them to the bastard they were searching for. "This may work," Koyama said with awe. "You guys did amazing work."

"Let me see that," Ryo growled, snatching the sheets from Koyama, examining them with his eyes (as well as Yamapi and Shige who were trying to get as much as they could see). "Oh fuck," Ryo breathed. "It may."

Tegoshi and Massu exchanged grins. Maybe another child could be saved.

--

Koyama woke up to the sound of Tegoshi practicing his voice drills with Tsuyoshi - listening as he hit every note exactly and in varying power.

"Does he have to do that every morning?" Shige groaned, voice still filled with sleep.

"We've been here for over a month now. And you're still asking that question?" Koyama winced as he got up, his bruises still not healed from their fight. When he threw open the door, he was only met with Niko about to rap on their door.

"Ah! Koyama, I see you're awake," Niko said good-naturedly. "Breakfast is about to start and then we're going to do meditation afterward to get all your magics in order."

Koyama gave their teacher a small smile. "Thanks, Master Goldeye."

"Niko, I've told you. No need to be so formal here." Without waiting for Koyama's response, Niko was already gone down the stairs, probably headed towards the breakfast table.

"Heard that Shige?" Koyama called over his shoulder, only seeing a bundle of blankets on top of Shige's bed.

"Nnngh," The bundle said. Koyama shook his head with a laugh. Then winced at the sore muscles there. As he stepped out of the hallway - noting with amusement Massu's dancing ribbons scattered all over the place - Ryo was passing in the opposite direction - headed for the stairs as Koyama moved towards the bathroom. He felt a sharp pain on his ass and yelped; Ryo laughed loudly, "Wimp."

"Just because you're used to using up all your magic, doesn't mean we all are," Koyama retorted, pouting.

"Bet that hurt him more than you," Yamapi yawned, coming out of the bathroom the house shared.

"Doubt it," Koyama mumbled as he moved to brush his teeth. Yamapi laughed, slapping Koyama's ass as well as he walked out complete. "You're as twisted as he is!" Koyama called out at Yamapi's back.

It was a weird life, Koyama thought, being around these people that he'd only known for a little over a month, and still felt like he knew better than his own family. But he was going to miss it sorely when he and Shige recuperated enough to leave.

He was going to enjoy every second of it while it lasted though. Koyama wiped off his mouth, promptly headed for the kitchen - Yamapi's cooking (with just a tinge of healing magic put into it to aid them all along) was waiting.
