The World Walkers: Taithmarin: Siobhan: Stepping Onto Taithmarin (part 2)

Part 1

“I’m not going to do that,” I said, even though it would probably have been much simpler. “This world chose me, for whatever reason, and I am going to make the most of being here.” I managed to smile at Arian. “You’ll help me do that, right?”

Arian nodded, but there was worry in her eyes. “You don’t need to make any decisions now, Siobhan. Take your time.” She reached out and took hold of my hand. “I am here to help you through the beginning of the transition, because that’s my job as a guide, so I’ll be with you for the next two weeks. Once the book has your name in it we find you a flat, which will be yours for the first two years unless you decide to move on sooner, which is furnished, and you’ll be given money every month for at least the first six months, so you won’t have to worry about getting a job straight away.

“The thing people often find the most difficult is how to deal with the length of the days, but what I’ve found is the easiest thing for me, personally, is to ignore that. I sleep when I need to sleep. Fortunately I’m lucky enough to have a job that permits me to do that, as it will take a while for you to change the way your body clock works, if that is what you want to do. Another thing is the length of the year, and the seasons, and just how different time is here to what it’s like on Earth. I’ve come to love Taithmarin, even though I didn’t think it was possible to when I first found myself here, so hopefully I’ll be able to help you fall in love with it too and then you’ll be able to make the most of being here.”

“Where is my flat?”

“How about I take you to it, make you a cup of tea, and then we can go from there?”

Before I’d even had a chance to agree to Arian’s plan, the way I was going to, she’d started very gently tugging me along the corridor. I think she knew that I was going to say yes, otherwise she never would have done that, because with most new arrivals she’s very careful, the total opposite of me. Generally I tell them everything I think they need to know in order to make an informed decision about whether they’re willing to give Taithmarin a chance or not. If they aren’t then I do my best to make things simple for them, so I don’t take them into the centre of town, but if they are… well, then I show them everything I can. Some of the guides won’t introduce someone to the Nox Gadael until they’re certain and I can understand why - it’s just not the same decision I’ve made, because I think if someone can deal with the Nox they can deal with anything Taithmarin might throw at them.
