“Would that do them any good?” Luna bit her lip. “You said that coming through the door wipes the memories of everyone they left behind, so surely you’d be sending them back to a world where no one remembered them and that doesn’t seem like something I would want to do, even if I had that choice.”

“I’d want the door to work in such a way that it replaces the memories that were taken, so that wouldn’t be an issue. We’d have to make certain that it sent them back to the very moment they left, the same age they were, and remove any magical effects that travelling through the original door had. As it is if someone does get back they will still have a lengthened life span, so they’ll live for centuries on Earth, which just makes it all so much harder.” Arian shrugged. “That’s a dream though, something that I doubt will ever happen, no matter how many people wish it would.”

“You never know - this is a magical world. Maybe it will happen in the future and anyone who isn’t happy will be able to go back home, although I think it should have another effect.”

“What’s that?”

“To wipe the memories they have of Taithmarin. Not through fear of them telling anyone about this world, but simply so they wouldn’t affect their ability to fit back into their old life.” Luna sighed. “Going back with the memories of living for decades on a world with magic, having grown up maybe and had children that they chose to leave behind, is something I couldn’t imagine being able to live with, even though that would have been all I wanted.”

Arian nodded. “You’re right and plenty of the humans who do want to return home have had children. Most of them grow up in the human area and never leave it, but some want to know more about the world they live on, because they’ll never be able to go to Earth, even though they like hearing stories about the world that their parents came from. Those children will have children of their own, who’ll grow up hearing the same stories, told by a grandparent who’s still clinging to the past to a grandchild who might not even believe there is a world called Earth, as they’ll have grown up here, with magic and races that those grandparents can’t accept.”

Luna shuddered. “Imagine what it would be like to find a door that would take you back to Earth after you’ve had grandchildren and when you get there you’re a teenage again, you can remember your children and your grandchildren but you can never get back to them, and you have to live your life all over again. I wouldn’t wish something like that on my worst enemy.”

“Fortunately I don’t think that could happen, although you might step through the door and still be the age you’d become on Taithmarin, which would be hard enough. Knowing that your entire family was back here and the family you’d left behind… after that long they’d probably all be dead.”
