Yeah, I think he's just asserting his control. Technically, he could fire me because I'm under contract, but my guess is I'll get a "Don't let it happen again."
Doesn't your contract include an "Act of God" clause? Seeing as how I've had several airlines try to claim that their inability to get me from Point A to Point Z was an "Act of God" when it was mostly just bass-ackward screwing up on their side, perhaps you would be justified in invoking it as well.
