Decision

Just so you're not left wondering, here's the end of the Opera New Jersey story.

Utah Festival called Friday morning. Their offer was to cover (understudy) Dancaire in Carmen and to cover Lancelot in Camelot. I accepted. The fact that this gig pays and comes highly recommended by my friend Kari was the deciding factor.

yeah, i'm sorry, but 1)be profounder for free or 2)be employed in your field for pay? door #2, thank you. that was a shitty thing for ONJ to say, and it sounds like whoever you talked to was acting like a whiny 16 yr old who just got dumped. SCREW this "do it for the exposure" if you're past about 22 and doing this professionally. you made the right choice.

I concur with spiralflames's comment generally, and will add that the guy at ONJ probably isn't even in any kind of spot because of your decision to turn them down-he'll probably just turn around and find some other person willing to work for free, compensated only by the hope and dream of some future work that may or may not ever come together ( ... )

I think the NJ people just want you to feel like you can't amount to anything without them. When people see real talent like yours, they want to put their mark on it somehow. I think you made the right choice, and congrats on getting some fabulous offers :) It's nice to have options
