so, wait. There are women who are like, "yeah, we trust our fellow-women to make decisions concerning the future of a fetus in their womb, but we don't feel that these same women can choose whether or not to breastfeed their children" ? That's... kinda weird.

I admit that I don't know a whole lot about the politics of motherhood, and personally I intend to be able to breastfeed my children when/if I have them, but I don't get what the case for banning formula--I don't get how that can legally stand.

That's what I don't understand either. The argument at least as far as I can tell is: womb=women's body/choice/health
boobiemilk=baby's health/body

Which, yeah, bobbiemilk is the best, and every mother has a responsiblity to try and breastfeed to the utmost of HER capability. But no other woman/doctor/legislator has the right to determine what that capabilty is. I know you will breastfeed, as I tried my best and when I couldn't I pumped for SIX months.
I don't know how it can legally stand either. But some women on the parenting communites are trying to get it to stand.

I guess you agree with me...you rambling drunk girl ;-)

Seriously though, breastfeeding is HARD even if you come well equiped. And the fact that so many hospitals are like: "here's the baby, now feed it..." no wonder so many women turn to formula.
Banning formula is not the answer, just like not handing condoms out will not stop teenagers from having sex. new mothers need education support and resources before and after the birth and the message from doctors and society at large should be that formula is a last resort, and that breastfeeding is the norm and standard. additonally the formula companies need to be reigned in.
