Summary: He doesn't like to let himself get too concerned with the nightmares, because if they were really that bad then Romania would do something about them. For hetachallenge.
Norway does not think he has ever heard someone scream quite so loudly as Romania does that night.
He wakes with a jolt, eyes shooting open because someone screaming in the middle of the night is never a good thing and has never meant good things; it means danger, emergency, war, and in some cases that Denmark's girlfriend is sleeping over. But Norway is good at screams, and this is not a scream let loose in the midst of orgasmic pleasure.
This is terror.
Beside him, Romania breathes heavily and his hands are grasping in the dark for something, anything to hold onto. Norway briefly considers telling him to go back to sleep and leaving the situation at that; he's already sharing a bed with the man and even that is asking a lot. But, as they are wont to do, England's condescending words regarding Romania's mental health come floating back to his mind and Norway decides it would be better to prevent an accident before it happens.
“Romania,” he says, firmly grasping one of the nation's wrists. Romania's fingers automatically wrap around his hand and cling so hard Norway knows his hand will fall off. “Romania, are you awake?” He speaks in English, he hasn't had the time to learn Romanian yet.
“Norvegia?”
“That's me.”
Romania takes a deep, shuddering breath. “Year.”
“What?”
“The, the year. What is it?”
Norway tells him.
“The light.”
Norway turns it on. Without breaking his grasp, Romania quickly examines his own hands, seeming relieved. “No blood,” he says.
“There will be, if you keep me awake any longer.”
Romania doesn't smile, or laugh, or react in any way, except to stare at his hands. Then he gets out of bed and leaves the room.
Norway doesn't know why.
