I just read through my last post where I talked about possibly being unemployed and thought I'd give an update.
I am still working for the same company. Well sort of. We were acquired by another company earlier this year and I've been working my ass off since then to help integrate all of the order processing, licensing, and asset management systems. It's been a different kind of stress. Where before I had a supervisor that I hated and a marginalized position that made me dread coming into work, now the stress is all from trying to keep from failing at my job.
My job...has changed a lot. That supervisor I mentioned quit back in June, and I've had to step in up a major way. I'm typing this from a hotel room in England on my second trip out here. Initially I was supposed to train a new manager, but he has been dealing with a serious illness and couldn't stay on. As a result, I have had to act as the manager of the UK team over the past couple of months. Technically the team reports to my boss in the US, but he is leaving the company in a week and is mostly checked out so I am basically on my own.
It's hard work. I have had to create a worldwide order process, train five employees, run reports to make sure they are doing their jobs correctly, and work with other departments to help make at least half a dozen snap decisions a day. I feel like I have aged about five years over the last six months. On top of that, I'm still making the same amount of money that I have been for the past two years, and I'm technically only contracted through December 31. There are vague talks with management about creating a new position for me, or putting me in an actual manager role, or giving me some kind of bonus, but right now it's all talk, and empty promises seem to be the norm here.
Anyway, it's good experience. I have been complaining that I needed more responsibility for years now, and now I've got more than enough.
Well I'll be in England for another couple of weeks. After that, who knows. There's no manager on the horizon and as of October 1 this team will probably be reporting to a VP who has no time to deal with them so I'm sure I'll be sent out here again.
