Shin sighed quietly and sank down to sit on the porch steps, slipping his geta off and setting them beside him and smoothing out a few wrinkles in his yukata. It was a beautiful night, warm and clear, all of the stars visible from Isshi’s back porch, twinkling down at the world below. It had been a beautiful evening. Especially the fireworks. Those had been spectacular. The fireworks were probably Shin’s favorite part of Tanabata Matsuri. He loved watching the colors explode in midair, so full of energy and then watch as the multi-colored stars floated lazily back to Earth. His favorites were the little ones that looked like little waterfalls of stars; the ones that kept on sparkling after the all the big, loud, flashy explosions were gone.

What he didn’t like, was the wishes, written down on their little slips of paper and hung on their bamboo stalks in hopes that they would come true. He loved them when he was a kid, when his wishes were material things, relatively easily attainable things. But for the past couple of years, his wish had been the same as the one he had written earlier in the evening, and much more meaningful now…

“Hey.” Shin jumped. He hadn’t even heard Akiya approach. The younger guitarist sat down beside Shin, shaking his hair out of his eyes.

“Hey. You’ve been doing that all night.”

“I know. I need a haircut.” Akiya glanced over at Shin, who had turned his attention back to the stars. “You okay?” Shin did not answer immediately, his gaze fixed on the stars above him. Akiya waited patiently. He had known Shin long enough to know that he would only talk when he was ready.

“Akiya, when you were a kid, what kinds of wishes did you make on Tanabata Matsuri?” Akiya chuckled and leaned back, resting his elbows on the step behind him, tipping his head back to watch the sky.

“Stupid ones. Y’know, I’d wish for a new bike, or a videogame that I wanted. Stupid stuff…”

“What about now?” Akiya looked over at Shin, who stared back at him, expression unreadable.

“Good health, luck for the band,” Akiya grinned. “For Izumi to put up with me for another year.” Shin smiled at this and went back to stargazing, shifting positions so that he too was leaning back on his elbows. They were quiet for a long time, content just to be in each others’ company. “You should tell him.” Shin met Akiya’s eyes, surprised by the comment. Akiya chuckled softly at his expression. “Just my personal opinion.” Shin sighed heavily and turned his eyes back to the sky, looking troubled now.

“I highly value your opinion.”

“I know.” Akiya leaned over and laid a gentle, comforting hand on Shin’s shoulder. “Tell him.” Shin looked back at him, dark eyes swimming with doubt. “If you don’t tell him how you feel, you may never know if he feels the same.” Akiya smiled and squeezed Shin’s shoulder. “I know you hate it, but sometimes you’ve gotta take chances.” Shin groaned, tipping his head back and banging it against the top step in exasperation.

“Don’t say that.” Akiya laughed out loud and Shin couldn’t help but join in. Akiya’s general state of happiness had always been rather infectious.

“You know its true.”

“Yeah, I know.”

“Akiya! Where are you?” Akiya glanced over his shoulder, into the house. “Akiya!”

“The boyfriend calls.” Akiya gave Shin’s shoulder one last encouraging squeeze before hauling himself up off the porch steps. Shin nervously chewed on his bottom lip for a moment.

“Akiya?” Akiya stopped, his hand on the handle of the sliding glass door and looked back at his best friend. Shin’s eyes swam with doubt and fear, but maybe with a little bit of hope too. “Could you send Naoran out?” Akiya grinned.

“Sure.” He winked. “Good luck.”

Shin watched him go for a moment before closing his eyes and letting his head fall back against the top step again. “I’ll need it…”
