Don't Question the Man, Question the Motivation

I remember reading a while back in the Best Of Craiglist archives a post about men-to-women relations. While some of it was the usual tripe about how women act differently and all that garbage, one thing did strike a chord.

In discussion of 'I love you'; he said that for men and women, the phrase means different things. For Women, he said, it mean 'I love you, right now. Tomorrow could be another story', and he advised men to say that in their head when they replied 'I love you too' so that they wouldn't be confused. For Men, he said, it meant 'I love you, now and forever'.

Now, while I do dislike to stereotype, I think there is an element of truth to what this guy was saying. Though I doubt that even half of guys and girls really do mean this when they say 'I love you', I do definately fall in to the stereotypically male category. It's very difficult to say it with conviction until you know it is true, which likely takes a long time to establish. This isn't to say it is or is not true at any given time before or after it would be said, but it appeals from the lips as some kind of vow. Sort of like a more serious 'I'd take a bullet for you'.

I can only speculate about the female side, but I think that it was a pretty bitter perspective. Though my own relationship experience cannot vouch for that particular idea, I have heard some damning recollections from others, which is probably where these things get formed. Just thought it was interesting and it was on my mind.

In other news, I HAVE A BIG FAVOR TO ASK!
This is for everyone. I'd like to know how everyone measures sucsess, both in a general and personal sense. Under what circumstance would you consider yourself to be sucsessful or happy or fufilled, as presumably you would be all of this things in such an ideal sense.

For example, if I made enough money to keep up with my hobbies in gaming and if I was doing creative work and still had an active social life and a stable relationship, I would consider myself to be in that pretty much ideal place. A little money, art, games, friends and romance.

Are there any circumstances you'd consider counter-sucsessful?
How about things that you don't consider to affect your own sucsess, but you know other people value?

Don't worry, I'm not crazy, and it's something more interesting than curiosity. Partake and you'll see. :D
