Took Will and the girls to see
Visually, it was stunning. So close to real, sometimes I had to stop and remind myself it wasn't. The plot was good--not great, but good--and the characters leaned more toward 'real' than 'cartoony,' for the most part. Mostly, I spent the movie thinking how much the three main kids reminded me of Harry, Hermione, and Ron. And picturing future-slash for the main boy (who didn't have a name) and Billy, because it would be lovely if they met again when they were older . . .
I may be the only one, but I was somewhat disturbed at the industrialization of the North Pole--Santa, of all people, shouldn't be adding pollution and overcrowding to the world. And I wasn't sure what the point was in making the elves Jewish. Nor did I entirely get the point of the hobo. Even so, I enjoyed it a lot. Definitely worth seeing on the big screen, if only to get the full effect of what it *looks* like.
Youngest niece asked me if I thought Santa really existed (her adoptive mother has told her he doesn't, although at nine, she'd probably kind of gotten that impression herself). I just said I liked the idea of Santa--someone who cared enough to give gifts without expecting anything in return. About that time, we passed the Chucky Cheese that has somehow sprouted in my town w/out my knowledge, so conversation turned elsewhere. I suspect I will be forced into going into that den of iniquity and hyper-stimulation at some point, as my attempt to tell Will he was too old wasn't met with much belief.
Am basically ready to start Sesa, just haven't yet. Am still mentally fiddling with yuletide story. Am battling urge to write HP universe story which is basically nothing but a really, really long, ultra-indulgent h/c fest. Because the world needs another one of those, really.
