Yesterday I finished Phil Bildner's middle school book:
A High Five for Glenn Burke.
Bildner has recieved disinvites over this book, or has been asked not to read from it or mention it at (virtual) author readings because of its LGBTQ content.
This is the sum total of the book's LGBTQ content:
A 6th grade boy, Silas, does a book report on Glenn Burke because he's like Burke in the sense that he loves baseball and he's also gay. He tells his BFF that he's gay, and she's fine with it. He tells one of his coaches that he's gay, and the coach behaves in a professional, ethical, and compassionate manner.
No crushes on other boys are mentioned. There is no kissing or romantic subplot. No scene of how Silas realizes he's gay -- we just know that he's figured it out.
I think the H8ers are afraid of kids reading a book that shows how their school administrators and adults in authority should be acting, more than anything else.
