Saw X-Men: Age of Apocalypse today. Liked it quite a bit, but I can see why the average joe wouldn't get the significance of several things, and I can see why many fans would be disappointed by some of the changes made to canon.
Loved young Jean Gray. LOVED HER. Loved young Storm. Young Kurt Wagner is as cute as a button. Caliban gave me the creeping willies. Jubilee was tragically underused.
The guy playing Cyclops had all the talent and charisma of a cinderblock.
Loved that at the end of the day ... love saved the day, love and standing together, despite the odds.
(And when I say love, I also mean, Magneto and Professor X are "just friends" the way that Cap and Bucky are. Charles will put himself at great risk to save Erik, and vice versa.)
I also dig the visual of the bravest person in the movie being a paraplegic man armored in nothing more than a lavender colored sweater and a pair of dress slacks.
It took me a bit to realize the significance of the post-credits scene, but once I had my memory jogged, I think it does a solid job of setting up the next movie, and the casting on "the mystery man" is perfect.
The "mystery man" collecting all those DNA samples for Essex Corporation is very likely Nathaniel Essex, or if not Nathaniel, he clearly works for him.
Nathaniel Essex is long time X-Men villain Mr. Sinister, one of my favorites because he's a great mix of obsessed mad scientist with a vision, manipulative motherfucker, and he rocks a look that's a mixture of slick and disturbing. Also, he's about as old as Wolverine.
