I did some searches online and found via Boardgamegeek, and meetup that there was was a boardgame group in La Crosse. They meet every Thursday evening and once a month on Saturday for all day gaming. it used to be a bar/nightclub but is now the community room for a church
may 5th thursday I arrived at the location, and was confused. There were a lot of non-gamers there and it looked like it was a restaurant. it seems someone wife gave a gamer a surprise 50th birthday party. So instead i came back Saturday for an all day event
Started by playing
Furstenfeld a fun little brewery type game, got kinda screwed when a palace card came up at the wrong time during endgame, and getting my 3 big factories in my first hand, screwed me out of the game.
Then a game of
La Citta which is a civilization game. The problem isn't building your civilization but feeding the people. I was able to accidentally block the leader in the game and win.
Then a silly game of
Nuns on the run , rules are not well written, and the player playing the nuns was a "seat of the pants" type gamer who tried playing the game based on memory then rules. too random, and I started in a bad place. But the concept is you are some nuns-in-training who are sneaking out at night to get your hooch, without getting caught.
My favorite has to be
Aricola. Great strategy game, that has a lot of "rule breakers" which change game play a lot. Had a lot of fun, but my initial strategy didn't work and kinda prevented me from doing well. one of the people who owned the game made little clay models to use instead of the wooden counters. there was a 3 way tie for 3rd place. which included me.
Finally the night ended with
founding fathers. I didn't like this game since it was rather random and had a lot of "whammy" type cards that drastically changed gameplay and prevented much strategy. I won because i was able to prevent a few people from getting victory points, instead of getting my own.
5 new games i never played, and I won two. not too shaby
