Titanic Gown

Full Steam Ahead

Seeing that we are for sure attending the GBACG last dinner on the Titanic event I thought I might take an opportunity to journal about my quest to dress myself- and my confused, but willing husband for what promises to be the event of the season.

I am admittedly a lazy journal keeper.  So you will not see alot of bells and whistles, but instead pretty much the bare facts of how I am planning to piece this together, and photos of my progress.

I will start with my design inspiration... Bohemian Garnets.  I have quite simply lusted after them for the past year and finally convinced my darling man to support my addiction.  So for our anniversary he let me buy the MOST beautiful earrings, necklace, bracelet and pins.  I have a wealth of stunning garnets to protect me from all evil... (I hear that is their power)

So... what to wear with them?  I could go with burgundy, or brown.  Feeling more subtle I opt for brown.  But that sounds so boring so lets call it Chocolate and wine?
I started with this inspiration Pic

I like the style of the the pink one.  But I want to tweak it a bit.
This is my current working idea

And the fabric... I choose brown Charmuese, Silk Georgette.. (I like the way it moves), and brown velvet.  I have some trimmings.  A lovely beaded lace, and a literal crap  ton of beaded velvet ribbon.  I have so much of it- It could either wind up everywhere or no where at all.  The lining is a wine cotton sateen.

First thing is to make a muslin... I used Laughing moons 1909-1913 pattern.
I just changed the neckline a bit to something I thought would look better on me.

It fits pretty good, i just needed to take in the bust a little... humph!

Next I traced the pattern out on freezer paper and started to lay it out on fabric and one layer of silk organza.  it calls for flat lining, but because I like to back my fashion fabric with the organza I choose to line it separately.  Less scratchy and now I can bone the flat lining easily.

I flat line all the Charmuese with the organza

And start to put it together.
I want the front piece to be velvet with the kimono over sleeves framing it.
Here it the lining

I had to take it in quite a bit on the side and front... but I have the back of a lumberjack so its all good there.
I also added boning channels on all the seams that I will fill later after attaching the outer layer.
So... Onto that.  I pieced the bodice outer together, and I'm still puzzling how to finish out the back.  I joined the lining and bodice at the neck and gave her  flip and this is where I stand now...

I tossed some of the trims on to see how that is going to play out and have still got to do the back placket and hooks.  Its fitting pretty well and I really like the neckline... not sure If I'm loving the gold beaded trim though.
Most of this is going to get covered up with the kimono sleeves.... so my motto is don't over think it.
Overall...  I am encouraged with the progress.  As you know the bodice is half the battle and I have to say even though the slinky material is a little craptastic on the sleeves, its not so bad.

Thats all for now... I told you I was lazy.
