18th Century Inspired Riding habit

Nov 20, 2011 16:03

Well here I sit on a Sunday afternoon with a little time on my hands while I wait for some beans to cook.  To which I will add ham and greens and I dont know what else.  Episcopal soul food is all I can say.
At any rate thought I would talk about the latest crazy I did.
I got it in my head after Williamsburg to do an 18th c inspired riding habit.  There were so many great ones put together I knew I had to take a stab.  I say inspired because if the use of leopard print velvet I had in my stash that was begging to come to the party.  Even though I did have a chat with Mark Hutter the master tailor at Williamsburg (name drop) who assured me they did in fact use animal print in their tailoring although I think it was more for mens wear.

I started with this image as one inspiration as to style

and proceeded to use JP Ryan's trusty jacket pattern and started to modify it to fit.

I created the vest by modifying a 70's vest pattern.

the skirt is just a basic 18th c petticoat in black taffeta.  Easiest part of the journey.  Here is some progress.

And... a little more.  I used a 2 piece sleeve pattern I had from something else.  And added all the piping and hand embroidered buttons.  Its the details that are so fun for me.

I made a little black tricorn and cocade to go along with it.  The Corgi (I know he looks foxy) Came from an artist off etsy.  I need another craft like a hole in my head.

Here I am at the Bals de Vampyre a couple weeks ago having my cards read.

And the full costume that night.  please excuse the hot mess of a hedghog.  My wig did not come in time... :(
