Got home last night and it was obvious that YoungBloke had got OldBloke's cold, quite badly. He was doing a lot of sniffing, and went to sit on the settee wrapped in a blanket as I went upstairs to get changed. I heard him yell and start crying so, since OB was cooking, I came back down to see YB sitting on the settee with tears, and blood, streaming down his face. "Smogg scratched me!" he said.
The blood was running quite freely from his nose, but also his mouth - I got him to spit a couple of times and have some sips of water, while I also cleaned up his nostril. Despite a lot of peering up his nose with bright torches there was no scratch to be discerned. Nor a bleeding point. I suspect what actually happened is that Smogg smacked him on the nose and that, coupled with a heavy cold, broke a blood vessel.
At dinner, when he'd cheered up, we discussed nose-bleeds. OB suggested that it wasn't a nose-bleed (this was before bedtime nasal investigation) but a bleed from the nose. YB replied, "but in this world, people call that a nose-bleed, Daddy". Can't argue with that, really.
Also at dinner, OB reported that YB's letter for homework this week was 'p'. So we did some thinking about what things start with 'p'. Potato. Purple. One-eyed, one-horned, giant purple people eater. Then I thought of something else. "I can think of an animal that starts with 'p' and makes this noise," I said, oinking. YB looked at me, puzzled, looked at OB, grinned and said "Daddy! Daddy makes that noise when he snores!".
Can't argue with that, either.
