My parents are getting their house re-roofed, so I've been hanging out at their house during the day. Mom's at work, Dad's been out of town hiking, and I haven't been scheduled at either job so I might as well be here in case the roofers have any questions ( Read more... )

I live on one of the busiest streets in San Jose.  Sometimes, it's a real pain - parking can be tough, people drive like maniacs, and it's noisy.  But there's one benefit: if we want to get rid of something large and bulky, all we have to do is stick it on the lawn with a "FREE" sign and it disappears within a day or two ( Read more... )

Over the weekend, a woman offered a 5' freezer to anyone who would come pick it up and take it away.  She said it worked great.  I was immediately reminded of my mom, who loves to buy large quantities of food (despite the fact that no one really eats three meals a day there anymore) and hates the fact that her narrow freezer can't hold all her ( Read more... )

At church this morning children handed out pink carnations to all the women, not just the mothers. The pastor took time to acknowledge the women who are struggling with infertility or never had the opportunity to have a child and the pain this day can bring them. Mom recently got back from a big trip to Greece and the Holy Land.  As she settled back into the rhythm of life in San Jose, she had to put up with my constantly whining about the things I missed about home: namely, Trader Joe's, Asian food, and instant gratification every time I get a craving for a certain treat.  Feeling sorry for me, Mom put ( Read more... )

Mom’s leaving for Mexico tomorrow. She’ll be sailing out of San Francisco, and no doubt she’ll be getting into plenty of scrapes and adventures while she’s gone. But, since she won’t be around to celebrate Easter, we had a little dinner tonight. She made lamb, and it was juicy and tender and delicious!
