In my last ceramics class, the teacher taught us how to make a cutting tool.  It's pretty straightforward - use the wheel to spin some fishing line into a really tight twist, and then tie washers on the end of the line on both sides. Today was the last day for wheel throwing in ceramics, which was something of a disaster.  I'm still pretty darn terrible at it - before this morning, I had not even been able to successfully raise the walls of a cup without collapsing them under the weight of the rim.  I managed to finish two little cups by the end of class, but they're not tall ( Read more... )

Everything's just more or less slugging along.

Ceramics - Working on a coil-building project. It has to be a minimum of ten inches tall, I think.  My design looks really cool on paper but I must confess that in execution it is less than exciting.  I think I may have started with too wide of a base.

I've been feeling a bit iffy about my ceramics class.  On the one hand, it's definitely fun.  Working with clay is very energizing; unlike painting, during which I tend to be pretty stationary, I move around a lot when trying to build up the sides of a cup or a pot and that keeps me pumped and engaged ( Read more... )
