Now that there was a weekend!

Outstanding weekend, as expected.  Notes:
  • drove home yesterday in a thunderstorm, the likes of which I've never seen before.  I wasn't aware it could rain that heavily, and we crept along at about 25 mph on the Mass Pike with flashers on.  To give you an idea of visibility I was in the fast lane pretty much following the yellow line on the left because I couldn't see more than 5 or 10 feet in front of me.  Incredible.  There was another storm Friday night that provided quite the light show, evidently.
  • we've had two air mattresses for a few years, bought new, never used.  I threw both in and Friday night blew up lickety-split.  It evidently had a slow leak because at some hour of the morning Laura got up and the air under me went to her side and I landed with a thunk.  Mattress #2 survived Saturday night, but the whole waterbed sensation is a little disconcerting.
  • The two games I played were fun.  Dorian ran a 4e mod and I'd always wanted to be in a game he was running.  I wasn't disappointed as it was challenging and a good time.  My only quibble is with myself, in that with me playing 4e mods every week I probably should have played one of the new systems instead.  But since I had such a good time I can tell myself to shut up a little.  My second game was a crazy Savage Worlds/Repo man game with Frank Michenzi running.  He's an outstanding GM and as usual, I had a great time, blessed with some terrific co-players.  My Flock of Seagulls fan bouncer was able to punch out Zeus (and a minotaur).  Great fun.
  • I ran Inspectres twice.  Saturday night was with all new players and went pretty well.  I held their hands for the first mission, and the second mission they spread their wings a bit and the creativity flowed.  Sunday morning is always a tough slot as everyone is pretty wiped out by then.  I also had the complication of one player I've had difficulties with before and a very young girl as well.  The 10 year old was perfectly nice and did as well as could be expected, but no matter what someone that young is going to have an effect on the game.  I also has one player basically refuse to answer questions during the interviews, really fun ones that were high points of the other two times I ran this mod, and it really dragged me down a bit.  I know the person and there's some social anxiety issues involved so I didn't push.  There were some other very good players who made it work - in all three runs of the game the characters of Astoria Marriott and Arthur Pendleton were brilliantly played by all those who donned their mantle and might need to make it to the next incarnation.  Frank Michenzi also played a wonderfully self-centered CEO - 'Hey, I've never made the same mistake that got all of my employees killed twice.'  Next year I might still run one session of Inspectres but maybe something else as well - I'm interested in taking a look at the new Dresden Files, for instance.
  • The mac and cheese was a hit, as usual.  The mac and cheese with bacon was evidently a culinary orgasm and vanished within seconds.  It was gone by the time I got down there, to which Laura quipped that I really shouldn't miss out on something like that and should make another batch at home in a week or two - just so I can have a taste, of course.  The chicken rolls and pepperoni rolls were okay, but the olive oil wash instead of egg was a mistake.  Too chewy, not soft enough.  Live and learn.
  • no dogs.  Understandable, but still a bummer.
  • Having Sunday night as a house with no kids was severely awesome and enjoyed muchly.
  • great people.  just the best.
