Remember
this issueon shion from half a month ago? Great news: the Dell technician
finally arrived today to replace the keyboard.
At this point, I feel compelled to stress that the keyboard was
replaced. Which was clearly the most critical issue I mentioned in my
original problem report, and was the problem that kept me from bringing
shion to campus. The other issue hasn't been resolved yet --
indeed, Dell only shipped half of the necessary parts to the technician to
begin with -- but it can't be all that important compared to the
keyboard.
Rang Dell again. They're going to bother to ship out the replacement
parts for the broken hinge today (they only ever shipped one of the
two necessary parts for the hinge, and Philadelphia never received even that
shipment), after which I can enjoy another two week delay while trying to
coordinate a sane meeting time with the technician. On the plus side, the
tech support fellow today was by far the most competent one I've spoken to
at Dell, and while waiting for his workstation to respond he commented on
various aspects of Dell support that help explain why these mistakes are so
common.
Anywho, have some pictures:
This is shion, which as you can see is perfectly usable as a
mobile system in its current state. Not immediately obvious in this photo
is the stack of DVDs being used to hold the display upright -- you can sort
of see them peeking out behind the display.
I don't believe I've posted any pictures of Luc yet, and I'm not sure if
anyone here has even met the system aside from
kitby, so here you
go: this is luc, from initial bringup late last month -- this was
taken more or less from the first stable boot to an xdm login
screen. This was not exactly trivial to achieve; 2.6 boot problems and
graphics driver issues were the major problems at the time. Not sure if I
had tablet stable at this point.
