New Year Musings

(I'll tell the tale of my saturday daytime trek later....)

Party @ Chris & Wes's place was a resounding success. The place looked great, and the food and company were wonderful. Chris made, from scratch, a crockpot full of barbeque pulled pork, using some of the meat from the boar she shot. The theme was apparently "food we caught ourselves", because there was also duck and rabbit, among other stuff. Way too much food. John actually remarked on this, and pointed out that neither he, nor Janet, nor I was involved in planning the food at all (we're all infamous for Too Much Food Syndrome).

Shae, Eileen, and Zoe were there, too -- it's always great to see them but Zoe was particularly rambunctious and silly (and happy to see me). And unlike Shae (who tried to play it cool but kept shifting where she stood so she didn't have to look at the critters), Zoe was not at all freaked out by the dead animals here and there around the house -- to be fair, I tease them about the taxidermy but it actually is pretty tasteful, especially now that it's spread out over a large house rather than cluttering every surface. So yeah, some significant goddaughter time, though to be fair, there were dozens of people there and I knew most of them. There were at least a dozen *children* there, because most of their friends are about the right age for that.

John brought mugs he made for us -- originally they were supposed to be Foambeard Ale mugs (a gaming reference), but the crest didn't quite work out. Instead they were just really cool mugs (and damn near weapons of war, they're that sturdy), but hooray for the win there. Later this month we'll break them in properly with a toast.

Unfortunately, all the fun took its toll -- I wound up with a screaming migraine and missed most of the day on New Year's Eve. I got up late, felt kinda blah, and played Marvel Alliance for an hour or two. Then I got nauseous, and the low-grade sinus headache mutated, so I laid down for a nap around 2pm -- and woke up after midnight when Granny got worried that I hadn't called her as I usually do.

But all was well the next morning, and it was off to Janet's for cherry chocolate bread pudding, quiche, and other breakfast fare and a group viewing of this year's Dr Who Christmas special. Then it was off to run an errand or two and waste some more time, and another "nap" that lasted six hours.

I'll say this, I started the new year well rested -- which is good, because I'll need it. I settle next wednesday, and I have a whole house to pack in the meanwhile!

zzzz, food, family, yay, my so-called social life, friends, holidays, zoe
