13.1 Delusion

PAST SCENE, SET DURING HOUSE EPISODE 4x02 “THE RIGHT STUFF”

“Arizona?” Chase snorted from where he was perched on top of the picnic table in the sweeping grounds of Princeton Plainsboro Teaching Hospital. He looked sceptically to where Wilson was standing. “He’ll never buy that. Why would I go to Arizona?”

“The Mayo Clinic,” Cameron guessed, looking up at Wilson for clarification. She was sitting on the bench beside Chase’s feet. “Would he buy Chase was at the Mayo Clinic?”

Chase looked down at her with an offended frown. “Why the hell wouldn’t he? I’d say he won’t buy that you went back to it after spending three years kissing his arse,” he retorted with a roll of his eyes.

Wilson watched as Cameron pursed her lips and looked away from her boyfriend. He raised his eyebrows with a slight curiosity but didn’t comment. “It wouldn’t be a hard push for him to come to the conclusion Chase was so pissed off at being fired that he left New Jersey altogether. In fact, House would buy that more than anything. He has a tendency to believe he’s indispensable to anyone in his life.” He had known for a couple of weeks now that both Chase and Cameron had returned to PPTH in brand new jobs away from Diagnostics. He also knew House had no idea of the fact and figured it could be just another tool to his advantage in the bid to try and get him to hire a new team. He’d been doubtful, of course, that Chase and Cameron would even have any want to assist him like that, though, and had been surprised when Cameron jumped at the chance to mess with House’s brain a little while Chase seemed bored and indifferent to the whole process.

“Can I go back to work now? I have a laparoscopy scheduled at two,” Chase said, jumping up off the table. “Tell him whatever you like. I don’t care. I just don’t want to have to keep taking the long route the Surgical ward anymore. It’s quicker to bypass House’s office. So get your story straight because starting tomorrow, I’m not going up a floor to get to my ward down a floor from Diagnostics.”

Wilson shared a glance with Cameron and then looked back to Chase. “You went to Arizona to work at the Mayo Clinic,” he confirmed. “If you see him in passing, act like he doesn’t exist.”

Chase threw Wilson a mock salute and then sauntered back off in the direction of the main hospital building. No kisses or hugs were shared with his girlfriend, but again, Wilson was first to politely ignore the oddity. “You think the best answer is to try and get House to think he’s delusional? I somehow can’t see that causing him to yearn for a new team,” Cameron said, the scepticism dripping in her voice.

Wilson smirked faintly. “You don’t think he wants to replace you?”

“He doesn’t want to replace us,” Cameron pointed out. “He doesn’t think he needs a team. You said that yourself. That’s why we’re here.”

“He’ll get a new a team. So if you want to work for him again, I suggest you backtrack now before new butts are warming those chairs in Diagnostics,” Wilson advised. “He’d take you back in a heartbeat. Saves him any extra work and he knows you like the role of lap dog.”

Cameron’s eyes narrowed a little. “I’m happy where I am. I don’t miss House. And I also don’t see how this little scheme of yours is going to work. But fine, if you need to say we’re in Arizona, say we’re in Arizona.”

“House doesn’t like things he can’t explain. It throws him and weakens him. If he suddenly starts seeing visions of you and Chase around the hospital, he’ll wonder if he’s going crazy and really does miss you. If he thinks he misses you, he’ll scramble as quickly as possible to get a new team to fill the gap as proof he doesn’t miss you. Bingo,” Wilson said smugly.

Cameron stood with a small sigh and shake of her head. “If you say so.”

“And you and Chase are engaged, getting ready to buy a house and settle down,” Wilson added, watching her for a reaction.

Cameron stopped and turned to look at him with her hands on her hips. “What the hell? What difference is that going to make to anything?” she demanded. “Chase can’t even put the toilet seat down, it must’ve been a damn miracle if he produced a diamond ring to me this quick.”

“No particular reason,” Wilson said, shrugging. “Just rubbing a little salt in the wounds. Call it passive punishment. It’ll sting more if he thinks you lot are getting on just swimmingly without him. That you don’t need him when he’s trying to tell himself he doesn’t need you.”

“And they call you the nice one,” Cameron snorted. “Arizona. Mayo Clinic. Engaged. New home. Check.” She shook her head again and threw a wave at Wilson over her shoulder as she followed Chase’s path back inside.
