she remembers him, he tries to remember her.

He’s sitting in his usual spot, underneath the great willow tree near campus, the one he always decides to hang under after lunch and before his color theory class. However, there was someone unexpected there when he arrived. She looked up, smiled, then continued to sketch something into her sketchbook. So she was an artist, like him.

Now, Jonghyun was never so great at starting conversations so he just sat there with his eyes closed, still thinking about who the girl was and why he’s never seen her around. He’s taking every single art class a freshman in college could possibly take but she has never been in a single one.

“You’re probably wondering who the hell I am,” the girl finally speaks up and ends her sentence with a low chuckle. He opens his eyes to look at her and slowly nods, answering her question - although it wasn’t asked as a question. She chuckled once more before leaning against the tree. “I can’t believe you don’t remember me, Lee Jonghyun.” She shook her head in disapproval and sat up to look at the boy.

The look on his face was now even more confused as it seemed that this girl - who still hasn’t stated her name - seems to know him. “Who are you?” He managed to ask the question but quickly slapped himself mentally as it was worded quite rudely.

It didn’t seem like she minded, however, as she only smiled and sighed. “Park Sojin. Does that ring a bell to you?” She looked at him with hopeful eyes only to be disappointed by his wrinkled up face. “I’ll take that as a no. Wow, what happened all those years that you possibly don’t remember me? Did you fall in love?” She giggled and leaned back again, waiting for a response.

“Am I supposed to remember you?” Jonghyun was forever confused and he scratched his head, hoping that his lost long memory would bring him back something. “I suppose not, but it makes me quite sad that you don’t. You used to follow me around every day, vowing that you’ll meet me in the future, all grown up as a great artist. Hey, you fulfilled the first two parts, how about that last one?” She looked into his eyes sincerely. “Did your drawings get better?”

The fact that could tell a whole story about when he was younger yet he couldn’t remember it freaked Jonghyun out a bit. “My drawings?” He tilted his head. “I don’t know really, I think they did, but I don’t remember how they looked back then so...” When there was no response from the other girl - Sojin - he decided to ask her a few more questions.

“So, how do you know me? I mean, if I can’t remember you, would you mind giving me a background check? Because I would really love to remember you if, supposedly, I followed you around all the time. I don’t do that with many people.” She let out a big breath before dropping the sketchbook she had in her hand.

“Where do I begin? Well, I’m two years older than you, if you haven’t figured that out yet. We lived in the same village when we were younger. I saw you in the park one day, all alone, and you were drawing a picture in the sand. I came up to you, ditching my drawing lessons that I was supposed to go to, and bravely said that you sucked at drawing.” She laughed as she remembered those times before quickly calming herself down to continue with the story.

“You were pretty offended, but too shy to say anything back, and because it seemed like you really liked to draw, I let you use my sketchbook and crayons that day to draw a real picture. I guess that’s how we became friends - until you realized I was older than you and I made you start calling me noona.” She nodded at the memories and took a brief second to look over at the boy that had a relaxed face, almost as if he was a kid listening during story time in kindergarten.

“After that day, we just hung out at that park. You loved to draw but your parents didn’t want you to, I don’t know about that anymore but seeing as you’re here, they must have accepted you. I hated drawing but was forced into lessons by my mom. We were complete opposites and I think that’s how we got along.” Sojin smiled brightly as she reminisced the beautiful moments she shared when the world was still like a blank canvas to them, one they could draw on and make out into their own.

“One day, we were in the park and it started snowing, first snow fall of the year. You were late so I was scolding you for leaving a noona out to wait for you. Suddenly, when we were drawing you kissed me on my cheek - remember that? I was pretty surprised so I didn’t know what to do. What I decided on was pushing you then running back to my house without looking back, leaving you alone at the park like the first time we met. I don’t know if that brought back bad memories or something but after that day, you never showed up at the park again.” The thought brought Sojin’s head down. “I waited for you but you never came back. Until one day, you sent a letter stating that you would meet me eventually, when you were a lot grown up, at this university. You were the reason I applied here.” She looked up at Jonghyun and stared into his eyes. “Do you remember now?”

He didn’t know what to say. Bits and bits of the story sounded familiar and his mom did say something about a noona that he used to be close with, but the full story was gone from his mind. “A little.” He scratched his head in confusion and frustration. He wanted to remember, but he just couldn’t.

She leaned close to him and smiled. “Would this help?” She gave him a quick kiss on his cheek, soft but slow. “I’ll see you around Jonghyun.” Sojin stood up and grabbed her stuff, leaving the boy all confused but smiling like a fool.

“I’ll remember you noona, I promise.”
