So last night I rewatched "The Maze Runner" in preparation (I needed to refresh my memory) and today I headed to the cinema to see "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials". I'm quite glad I rewatched the original because I think I might have been a bit lost at the beginning of this if I hadn't.
I'll start by saying that I preferred the simplicity of the first movie - this one got a bit complicated in places (where there was too much going on and too many characters) but I did enjoy it for the most part.
Dylan O'Brien's Thomas was good and I liked how he didn't trust everyone at the beginning (which is where the first movie ended really) even though the others were happy to be out of the glades. Obviously that happiness didn't last. I liked how his character seems to have taken the lead and the others are willing to follow him even if they (and him sometimes) don't know where he's going or what the plan is. They have complete faith in Thomas to not let them down. I quite like that and the friendships between the main boys is one of the strengths of this story.
I liked the introduction of Brenda and the scenes between her and Thomas were quite good - I like their friendship. She seems like a cool character and I'm looking forward to where things go with her in the next movie (I'm assuming there's gonne be one?). I also thought the progression of Teresa's character was interested if slightly predictable.
I thought the action sequences were good and very well done - and there were a lot of them! It was definitely a physical movie for the cast and the was lots of running and shouting. While the action stuff was very good I thought the characterisation was slightly lacking. I would have liked a better balance there.
To sum up, I enjoyed this but as seems to be the theme when it comes to these dystopian movies (based on young adult fiction) things just got a bit too complicated when I think sometimes simple can be better. If you liked the first one then this is worth checking out. I think I'll give this about 7 out of ten - the first one was slightly better, I think.
Incidentally, apparently there are five books (I thought it was a trilogy!) Are there gonna be five movies?
Trailers:
Pan - it was the first time I'd seen this trailer. I thought the movie looked okay but I didn't really grab me. I'd rather watch the previous Jeremy Sumpter "Peter Pan" again if I'm honest.
The Walk - this looks really interesting and is a film that I think could be really cool in 3D - and if not is the kind of film that benefits from being seen on the big screen. I did find it strange that the trailer mentioned it being a Robert Zemeckis movie and listed some of his movie but didn't mention "Back to the Future". Maybe because it's a more serious movie?
Everest - I think this look okay but a little bit 90's and I'm not sure if that's a good thing in this case. I don't think I'll be rushing out to see this.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 - I think this is the final movie in the Hunger Games saga (do people call it that?). The trailer was okay but I had no idea what was going on. I have only seen the first one though (I think?) and apparently a lot has happened since then.
