i think that if you can't be witty, you ought not speak. "banter" has a somewhat dismissive connotation that i find irksome. conversation should be as enjoyable as it is functionally, and generally more so. i'm not certain whether this is a perspective adopted by most hardcore engineers.
"how's the weather" sucks, but "how's your mother? pardon, i guess i'd know better than you" has at least some interactive merit.
as far as i can tell, the difference between sales and engineering is that the frontside guys have before them the improbable task of making people love them for some limited amount of time, whereas the foundation folks are bent towards the need of making relative cretins (technologically speaking) depend on them absolutely. to me, this is a difference between short-term and long-term focus.
i'm really good at making people love me for a little while, but if i'm not around someone else can probably do it sufficiently if not so fluidly. in the absence of an interior decorator you can move your own furniture around, but if the bedrock leaves there's not much for which to hold the house. it may be difficult to sell lillies to desert dwellers, but atlas i think would have different concerns.
unfortunately for him, his job is one that's not likely to attract notice until he fucks up, whereas the gardeners reap praise with every success.
