My Kinda Music!

Sea Green - William Orbit

There was a time, back in the 80s, when my folks got me my first real video game system, the Nintendo Entertainment System. I still remember the moment we purchased it, brought it home, and began to play it. It was me and my little brother, and to a lesser extent my folks, playing with this new marvel of modern technology. I remember unpacking everything, taking the components out of the nice and neat styrofoam packaging, and taking in that "new electronics" smell. My parents bought the NES Deluxe from a video/electronics store that used to be down on Western and Sunset (in Hollywood) inside what used to be a Ralphs supermarket. The deluxe system included the Zapper Gun and the R.O.B. auto gyro robot, along with Duckhunt and Gyromite. I think I was up until midnight playing the games, where my bedtime was usually 10. Over the next few weeks and months, I managed to cajole my parents into getting me The Legend Of Zelda (in all its gold-plated glory), Metroid, Section Z, Lifeforce, Super Mario Brothers, and close to a hundred other games before the release of the Super Nintendo. But I still remember how exciting those first few days were, and how much I felt like technology would be a permanent part of life going forward.

I don't quite know why, but this track brought that memory back to me in a big rush. It's a moment in time I hadn't thought about in for a long while, and this track just brought it all back. The feelings, the memories, even the "new electronics" smell. I have no idea why, though. There must have been something from that time that imprinted in my brain, and only now got unlocked by this track. Trippy.

ETA: I just did a little reading up on William Orbit. So much of the music I love seems to come from the UK. I wonder if a musical tour of the London electronic underground is in order if Jen and I ever do make it there one day for vacation.
