A TV series gimmick for the current economic slump

Just as "24" had as its constraining conceit a close attention to elapsed time, how about a show, perhaps a sitcom, where every main character's money was strictly accounted for in a realistic way?

I mean, it seems that people in television land always can afford new clothes, eating in restaurants, going on vacations at the spur of the moment, and all the latest gizmos.

The "all the latest gizmos" bit is probably product placement, so this might be a hard concept to sell to a network.

But in the right hands, this is a project that could have real audience appeal. Perhaps Top Ramen could be the sponsors.
