"...when the walls come tumbling down..."

My husband actually took some vacation time this weekend on Friday evening and Saturday. He's spent his time resting and piddling at things around the house. Tonight, the shelf above the washer and dryer took a notion to collapse. It couldn't have done this earlier while Jim was off and had time to fix it. No, it decided it would be better to finally give up the ghost tonight at midnight when my husband and I can do nothing about it but vainly attempt to clean up the mess. We had to pull out both the washer and dryer to get to some items which fell behind them. Now, after three tries at getting the dryer hose to stay attached, we finally had to say "screw it." Jim has to be up at 5:00 in the morning, and he doesn't need to be fooling around with a dryer until 1 AM. So, it looks like it will either have to keep until next weekend, or he will have to use more vacation time (or at the very least, leave work early one day).

I know it's just a minor inconvenience, and to be honest, most of the shelving in this house has been on the verge of collapse for quite some time. I believe the shelf in Jodi's closet fell halfway about two years ago, and we managed to do a hasty patch repair job on it. I don't know whether the home builders or the previous owners installed them, but they are the cheap painted metal frame shelves held into place by even cheaper plastic brackets that eventually break over time. (This is what happened tonight. I found small pieces of plastic brackets all over the floor.) Anyway, we had already planned to work on reorganizing and cleaning the four primary closets in the house after Jodi leaves for Georgia next month. I suppose now we will also take the opportunity to replace all the shelves in said closets just to be on the safe side.

I really wish you could have heard the noise it made when it fell. Seriously, I've never heard anything like that before in my life. Scared the bejesus out of us.
