Opinion on Imus

Apr 12, 2007 23:08

I have been following the Imus conflict kinda losely over the last week but I'm fully aware of his career and I am glad that someone finally got pissed off enough at his comments to get him fired. If you've ever listened to his previous broadcasts, you'll find them laced with racism and bigotry.

Do I think this is a step back for freedom of speech? Yes. Of course, he'll move to satellite radio, make a fortune and it will all blow over and not even be a footnote in a history book. In this country hwe have a right to freedom of speech, even if the general public doesn't like what's being spewed. KKK members don't get fired from their jobs, nor do Black Panthers or Radical Muslim Members.

But what I mean in the respect that I'm glad about the firing is that it appears that society continues to move in a direction where comments (regardless of protected by the Constitution or not) that spread hate and seek to divide humanity are looked down upon and carry consequences.

Its a positive sign in my opinion.
