Diamondbacks

Well... If I were ever going to miss all but one game of an entire baseball season, I guess it would be during one of the rebuilding years such as this. As one might imagine, living in England, there aren't many Arizona Diamondbacks games on tele, but there was one. It came on at 1:05 in the morning a few months ago. I was engulfed in nostalgia looking at Bank One Ballpark and realizing that it is no longer an hours drive from me. Even at ti's most expensive a game would cost me $150. This is seats a few rows from the backstop, parking right behind the stadium and eating like a king. It could obviously be much cheaper. I think one could get a seat in the nose bleed section for $8, but this isn't the sort of thing one wants to drive 100 miles for. I much preferred watching a game on Fox Sports or the WB network. I can still remember the music, or watching the highlights at the end of the game.
Last night I got to re-experience this to a minor degree. A Crystal Palace game was on tele and I got to watch about three minutes of it. Like watching the D'Backs in England, Crystal Palace, especially now that they are no longer in the Premiership, only has about one game a season on TV. But after the match I tuned in and watched the commentary until the highlight snippets at the end.
So yes, I do miss getting to watch Diamondbacks games at will. I could watch with a hot dog, or burrito, a six pack of Coca Cola and sometimes a dog sitting in my lap, watching with me. But as I said, a rebuilding year was one to miss. I still keep an eye on ex-D'Backs, especially Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson. Yankee and Red Sox games to manage to get aired here, albeit in the middle of the night. Kids around London wear Yankee caps as a fashion statement. Maybe next year, or maybe once I have a job and the team has worked the kinks out, I'll have the financial wherewithal to watch games on-line or at least listen to them. It's a funny thing, I used to read about people being nostalgic about baseball and I never really understood because Arizona never really had a team. But the last time I was in England and did listen to a game on-line, it was amazing. It was like I was there, driving my car home, cheering when a two run double tied the game. I could almost feel the excessive heat and see the mountain silhouetted sunset as I raced home to see the game on television.
Maybe some day I'll find a way to watch football matches as well. I only really care about England, U.S., Crystal Palace and maybe Tottenham Hotspur matches.
