1. You ever work with one of those people who's extremely smart about all the wrong things? When it comes to actual productive work they're problematic if not downright counter-productive. How do they get that way and, more importantly, how do I avoid becoming that way myself?
2. Nope. Haven't bought my ticket yet, though Jin did leave me a cute note reminding me to do so. I'd post a picture but can't because my computer is old.
3. I forgot to post my list of books read in December.
Here you go:
Wise Children - Angela Carter
The Chance sisters are the illegitimate daughters of Melchior Hazard a famous Shakespearian actor. Dora Chance recounts their life on the occasion of their father’s 100th birthday. Slight Magic Realism ensues.
Chimerascope - Douglas Smith
A decent collection, I reviewed it for Innsmouth Free Press. The SF stories were my favorite.
The Shark-Infested Custard - Charles Willeford
Four “normal” guys quickly start behaving like desperate criminals when a bet goes awry. It’s a bit rough around the edges and I suspect it started life as either a short story or attempts in trying to get a voice down, but Willeford’s sense of the absurd is on full display here.
Night Flight - Antoine de Saint-Exupery
A night in the life of 1930s airmail pilots in Argentina. A bit like Simenon meets Joseph Conrad, you can easily imagine it as a black and white movie and catch the faint scent of wool, leather, and cigarettes from the pages.
