Just read the first two Chrestomanci books by Diana Wynne Jones. (Have this cold that's been going round the internet and can barely think straight, let alone breathe, but that's beside the point. *g*)

As of now, one thing: eeeee the magic. They have what the Dresden Files and Jno. Strange were both missing - proper magic, green and living, that ( Read more... )

Which two have you read? (I know that sounds a strange question, but in chronological order, the first is The Lives of Christopher Chant, and then Conrad's Fate - I think - but Charmed Life is the proper first, and the first written - and then Lives? Or maybe one of the others, I forget now. So I ask, because I'm glad you [seem] to be liking them so far. I thought Chrestomanci might be okay for you. She varies quite a bit, so you may not like some of the others, but, yes, she does really think about magic, and other worlds, and the rules that would therefore follow from whatever kind it is. And is frequently very funny at the same time. Possibly that sentence makes sense somewhere, sorry.

Sorry about the cold. (Going round the internet?! Eek.)

Charmed Life and then Lives of Christopher Chant. There was an anthology version that had them in that order. (The next two - the only other two - in this anthology version, called The Chronicles of Chrestomanci, are "Magicians of Caprona" and "Witch Week". Are there more? *goes to poke Wiki for reading order*)

(Also, where did I hear "a very long procession of one person" before - was that in one of your text icons? I see why you text-icon-ify her so much.)

No, that's the perfect reading order. There are two more - Conrad's Fate, and The Pinhoe Egg. Conrad's Fate is another one with a relatively young Christopher, and The Pinhoe Egg the only one really with Cat and Janet after Charmed Life. There are also a few short stories - I can't remember what the collection is called, but I bet Wiki will tell you.

Yes!! :-D The lovely text icons were by catwalksalone and can be found here & here. I don't remember actually using that one though, although I did save it - maybe someone else has it?

I think I just saw it in the icon post there, then.

According to Wiki, the short-story collection is "Mixed Magics". (Wiki is a very useful thing for booklist reference, but I always forget to use it. ;P)
