I just finished my Visual Narrative paper, it ended up being nine pages! I got past eight and a half and just decided that I really didn't want to keep going. Though I still have to give it a few more read-throughs to make sure everything looks alright, so I may end up adding another paragraph or two to flesh out the argument. It was a really interesting paper to write. I wrote on Gods' Man by Lynd Ward which is a novel made up entirely of woodcut images and whether or not it aligned with E.M Forster's narrative theory. I also added in some aspects of comic theory, just to show how much I learned this semester. We'll see how the prof likes it, though I will say right now that I am happy with my analysis. Had we been asked to write this exact same paper at the beginning of the semester, I would have completely flopped. I guess I did learn something!
Once I'm done editing this paper (which needs to happen today) I have to start researching for my other paper that's due next Thursday. This one is another long paper - I believe it's supposed to be eight pages. It's funny how my perception of 'long' papers has changed over the course of this year. I think my level-300 seminar course is the culprit. After writing a 15 page paper on Emerson's epistemology, very few things seem daunting.
8 days, 1 paper, 1 jury, 1 concert, 2 tests until I am do-o-one. So dang close and yet so dang far.
Also, not sure if I wrote this but I was accepted to Regents Park College, Oxford next year BUT (I led you guys on right there!) Olaf will not support my acceptance which means I'd have to a) take a leave of absence from Olaf and not have any of my credits transfer and b) pay out of my pocket for a year abroad. No thanks. However, I was officially accepted by Oxford, which is something to be proud of and something I can put on my resume once I start applying to grad school. Yatta! The more I look at my classes next year, the more excited I am to stick around Olaf. Listen to this course list:
-Philosophical Theology (with Taliaferro! He's the nice prof who was fighting to get me into Oxford and who will write me a kickass recommendation letter in a year or so!)
-Romantic/Neoclassical Literature (I needed another English Elective for my major. Should be fun)
-Asian-American Literature (another requirement for the major. We better read some Japanese authors!)
-Literary Criticism and Theory (another level-300 seminar course, oh God. But I figure if I was able to stuff a semester's worth of seminar level work into one month as a sophomore, I should be able to do this in a semester as a junior...right? Anyway, I'm really excited for this course because I'll get to learn how to write even BETTER PAPERS!)
The two courses I think will be my favorites are Philosophical Theology (my favorite branch of philosophy AND I'm super excited to work with Taliaferro) and the Literary Criticism/Theory class - because of PAPER WRITING YAY! I'm excited to get better at writing papers. That seminar course I took over J-term really improved my writing exponentially. It was amazing to see how much better my writing became. Since then I've kind of felt on a plateau; I generally do well on my papers but that's because I've discovered a system that works well and simply keep repeating it. It's boring and I know I can do better.
But, honestly, I'm more excited for summer.
